🕵️ GitHub Can Be a Gold Mine for Exposed Secrets

Public repositories sometimes contain far more than source code.

Misconfigured or accidentally committed files can expose:

* API keys
* Access tokens
* Database credentials
* SSH private keys
* Passwords
* Cloud configuration files
* Environment variables
* Authentication secrets

Defenders can use GitHub dorks to proactively hunt for these exposures across assets they own or are authorized to assess.

Examples include:

* filename:.env
* filename:id_rsa
* filename:wp-config.php
* filename:credentials
* filename:secrets.yml
* filename:database.yml
* client_secret
* api_key
* authorization_bearer
* password

There are also several tools designed to automate secret discovery, including TruffleHog, GitRob, GitHound, GitSecrets, GitGot, and GittyLeaks.

⚠️ The interesting part is not the dork itself.

It is how quickly one forgotten commit can turn into an exposed production credential, cloud account, database, or internal system.

Organizations should continuously monitor public code repositories for leaked credentials and immediately revoke and rotate any exposed secret. Deleting the file alone is not enough if the secret remains in commit history.
