I'm reminded once again not to smile too much with the people at your work.
They're really not your friends.
Just be professional, courteous and keep it moving.
Let me give you some context from the doctor’s POV.
When I was an HO in paediatrics, friday clinics started at 9am.
On Thursday, I’d go to work by 8am, close at 4pm, then continue call from 4pm to 8am on friday morning.
From 8–9am, I would have to quickly do ward rounds for my patients in the ward, collect samples, chase lab results, set IV lines, give IV meds, etc.
Then, I was still expected to be in clinic by 9am to start seeing patients.
In all of this, I would rush back home for about 15–20 minutes to just shower and come back to the hospital.
Breakfast?…forget that one because, no time.
But God forbid I got to clinic at say 9:15am.
You’d hear snide remarks like…
“See the time she’s coming to clinic.”
“We’ve been sitting here since 7am but look at her strolling in by this time.”
“She’s taking her time because she knows we have no choice.”
“This doctor doesn’t have regard for people’s time.”
“We have other places to be.”
Nigerian patients really do not know what happens behind the scenes.

#JusticeForDrWisdom: New Information Reveal Port Harcourt Hospital Queried Late NYSC Doctor for Missing Evening Games While He Was Ill
Fresh details have emerged in the case of late NYSC doctor, Wisdom Oghenetega Enakirerhi, with newly surfaced documents showing that he was officially queried by the Military Hospital, Port Harcourt, for failing to attend an evening sporting activity while battling serious health challenges.
The development comes days after reports alleged that the 25-year-old doctor repeatedly sought a three-week sick leave but was initially denied, before his eventual demise.
A query dated June 10, 2026, accused the corps member of “absenting yourself from Tuesday’s evening games,” describing the action as “disobedience to the hospital’s rules and regulations.”
The letter further stated that his conduct reflected negatively on his discipline and ordered him to submit a written explanation in six copies on why disciplinary action should not be taken against him.
In his handwritten response, Dr. Enakirerhi apologised for missing the games but explained that his absence was due to deteriorating health rather than disregard for hospital regulations.
He disclosed that he had recently developed multiple medical conditions, including chronic right lower limb neuropathic pain, dyspnoea on mild exertion, palpitations, chest pain, and had also experienced a febrile illness with temperatures above 39°C.
He wrote that participating in strenuous physical activities could have worsened his condition and appealed for understanding.
“My non-participation has not been due to a lack of commitment or disregard to hospital rules/regulations but was unfortunately necessitated by ongoing health challenges.”
He added, “My absence from the games was not due to disregard for the hospital’s rules but was driven to safeguard my fragile health and prevent any potential medical complications.”
As at the time of filing this report, neither NYSC nor Military Hospital Port Harcourt has made an official statement about the incident.
Nigerian Public Service Rules Sick Leave Entitlements:
Days 1–2 (Immediate Notification): You can stay home for 2 consecutive days without a medical certificate if you fall ill suddenly. You must notify your line manager within 24 hours.
Up to 7 Days: A sick leave certificate from any qualified healthcare provider or private practitioner (under NHIS/HMO) is valid to excuse your absence.
Up to 3 Months: Beyond 7 days, a Government Medical Officer at a designated government hospital must certify your illness. They can grant and renew certified sick leave for up to 3 months without a full Medical Board.
Up to 6 Months (Full Pay) – Rule 120216: If your illness is severe and extends beyond 3 months, you are entitled to up to 6 months of sick leave on full pay, certified by an authorized medical board. If you need more time, you get another 6 months on half pay.
Leave Separation: Sick leave is entirely separate from annual or casual leave. Management cannot legally deduct sick days from your casual leave allocation.
Please, dear colleagues, let's kindly retweet this for our seniors to see.
Some seniors are often quick to punish junior colleagues for not informing them promptly. However, the service rules clearly states that notification should be made within 24 hours. It does not say that immediate notification is required, nor should a delay within that 24-hour window be interpreted as disrespect.

I read novels for entertainment. I’m not trying to memorise anything, and once I put the book down, most of the details fade away.😅
Ask me what happened a day later, and there’s a good chance I won’t remember. But while I’m reading it, I’m completely immersed; that enjoyment is what matters to me.
