My name is Okoye Chukwuemeka. I have been hired 113 times on Upwork as a freelancer working from Nigeria. Most of these came through job invitations and direct messages.
I have completed over 3000 hours on the platform, and I have helped many people hit their first $15k, $10k, $8k, $4k, $2k and more on Upwork.
I did not do anything special. I am not more talented than most of you with valuable digital skills.
After reviewing countless Upwork profiles, I discovered one universal mistake. Most freelancers simply do not understand how the platform works.
If you do not understand how the platform works, you will struggle to make money on it.
Long story short, I created practical step by step videos on my YouTube channel to help you understand Upwork properly and start earning faster.
STEP 1. HOW TO OPTIMIZE YOUR PROFILE

STEP 2. HOW TO GET JOB INVITES WITHOUT SPENDING CONNECTS

STEP 3. HOW TO APPLY FOR JOBS THE RIGHT WAY

If you are serious about succeeding on Upwork, watch these three videos and implement what you learn.
Designers, stop sending “Hi, please find attached.”
If you’re applying for jobs without an application email…
You’re already blending in.
Most designers attach a resume + portfolio link and send:
“Dear Sir/Ma,
Please find attached my CV.”
That’s not an application.
That’s a file transfer.
Recruiters don’t just hire based on attachments.
They hire based on positioning.
Here’s a simple application email template that actually gets responses:
SUBJECT : GRAPHIC DESIGN APPLICATION - YOUR NAME
Dear Hiring Manager,
People engage most with a brand when visual assets, design materials, and
media content are designed to communicate the brand and connect with
audiences. With over X years of experience as a Graphic Designer, I’ve
designed logos, social media graphics, advertisements, and media materials with over 200 visual assets that communicate brand messages, support marketing campaigns, and drive audience conversion.
Many organizations deal with visuals that fail to convert, limit audience
understanding, and weaken brand identity. I’ve addressed this by understanding the brand direction and target audiences, designing from project briefs, working closely with marketing teams, adjusting designs based on
feedback, and structuring reusable design assets for future use. This allowed
visuals to remain usable for multiple projects.
My CV is attached alongside my portfolio for a detailed review.
Having me as your Graphic Designer means adding a creative professional
who approaches design with direction and attention to how visuals communicate with audiences and support business goals.
Regards,
Halo
Why this works:
• Shows relevance immediately
• Mentions results
• Sounds intentional, not desperate
Your email is part of your positioning.
Don’t waste it.

How to find company career pages that don't appear on job boards!
In 2026, many high-growth startups and premium global firms avoid sites like Indeed and some others because they don’t want 10,000 low-quality applications.
They prefer candidates who have the initiative to find them directly.
Here is how to find the Private Portals: 👇
1. ATS Google Hack: Most companies use Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS) like Greenhouse, Lever, or Workable to host their jobs.
You can bypass job boards by searching these databases directly.
Command: In Google, type: site:https://t.co/M0Ahu5LDGI "Remote" (Your Role)
This pulls every live job currently hosted on Greenhouse that includes your role and the word "Remote," many of which were never "advertised" on LinkedIn.
2. Reverse-Engineer the Funding News: Use sites like Crunchbase or TechCrunch to find companies that just raised a "Series A" or "Series B" round of funding.
A company with $10M in new funding is going to hire. They often build their internal career page before they ever pay for a LinkedIn ad.
✓ Find the "About Us" page of these companies and look for the "Careers" link in the footer.
✓ Follow the "People," not the Boards - Head to LinkedIn, but skip the "Jobs" tab. Search for "Head of Talent" or "People Ops" at companies in your target industry.
✓ These people often post "We're hiring for X" as a text post on their personal feed to get referrals before they ever list it on a job board.
If you find the post, you’re 2 weeks ahead of the crowd.
3. The Directory Strategy: Go to the portfolio pages of major Venture Capital firms (like Y Combinator, a16z, or Ingressive Capital).
These VCs have "Portfolio Job Boards" that aggregate roles from all the startups they’ve invested in.
These roles are high-quality, often fully remote, and rarely make it to the noisy public job boards.
4. The Sitemap Search: If you have a dream company but their "Careers" page looks empty, try searching Google for: site:https://t.co/Z3AR0JRYXU inurl:careers.
Sometimes companies have Hidden pages for specific regions or specialized roles that aren't linked in their main navigation menu yet.
When you find a role this way, don't just apply. Since you found a private door, use it.
Find the hiring manager on LinkedIn and send a DM: "I was researching (Company Name) and found your internal listing for (Role). I noticed you haven't posted this on the major boards yet, so I wanted to reach out directly..."
This shows you have the research skills they are looking for.
Courses are great, but I’d strongly advise every career professional to acquire a recognized certification in their field.
Beyond the nomenclature, it proves that you’ve been tested, benchmarked, and validated against national/global standards.
Examples:
• Accounting/Finance: ICAN, ACCA, ACA, CFA
• Taxation: CITN
• HR: CIPM, SHRM-CP/SCP, PHRi, CIPD
• Project Management: PMP, PRINCE2
• Tech: AWS, Azure, CompTIA
• Risk & Compliance: CRISC, CISA, ISO
• Marketing: CIM
Supply Chain: CSCP, CPIM
• Business Analysis: CBAP, CCBA, PMI-PBA
• Health, Safety & Environment (HSE): NEBOSH
• Facilities Management: IFMA, CFM
• Education / Training: PGDE, ATD, CPTD
• Public Relations & Comms: CIPR, APR
It’s a pricey investment in terms of time and resources, but it delivers one of the highest career ROIs you’ll ever get.
The major reason why many Nigerians NEVER get USD / international remote jobs is because their resumes are only optimized for local hiring.
If your goal is to get an international job in 2026,
Here’s what you’re doing wrong and how to fix it:
1. Location Mistakes
❌ Lagos, Nigeria
If you put your location this way, global recruiters might instantly assume timezone + relocation issues.
✅ Write your location as Remote (GMT + 1) or Remote (UTC + 1)
2. Local Terms that Global Recruiters Don’t Understand
❌ NYSC, HND, BSc (Ed), SIWES, NEPA, LGA, etc.
Most foreign recruiters don’t Google acronyms. They skip.
✅ Translate your acronyms or remove them:
• NYSC → National Service (1-year full-time work placement)
• HND → Higher National Diploma (Technical Degree)
And so on.
3. Duty-based Experience (local style)
❌ Responsible for managing social media
That’s local hiring language.
✅ Use results + metrics:
Grew Twitter account from 3k → 18k followers in 6 months, driving 40% increase in inbound leads.
4. Education Placed Above Experience
Local recruiters care about this, but global recruiters don’t.
✅ Lead with skills & results, not school.
Education goes after experience unless you’re entry-level with no tangible / real experience.
5. No Global Context
❌ Salary in naira
❌ Tools common only in Nigeria
❌ No timezone or async experience mentioned
✅ Highlight:
• Remote collaboration
• International clients
• Tools used globally (Slack, Notion, Jira, GitHub, etc.)
Bottom line:
Global recruiters scan fast.
If they don’t understand your CV in 10 seconds, you’re out.
