LASEPA ANNOUNCES 2026 INTER-TERTIARY INSTITUTION'S ENVIRONMENTAL ESSAY COMPETITION
… Winner Gets ₦2M, Consolation Prizes For Others
In its continued efforts to promote environmental sustainability among students of tertiary institutions in Lagos State, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) is set to organise the 2026 Essay Competition as part of its Inter-Tertiary Institutions' Environmental Summit 2.0.
Themed “Combating Transboundary Pollution in Lagos State: A City-Level Intervention or National Effort?”, the competition is designed to stimulate critical thinking and proffer innovative solutions to environmental challenges (especially pollution) affecting Lagos State and its surrounding communities.
The grand finale of the event is scheduled to be held on Wednesday, June 9, 2026, at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja, Lagos.
Speaking on the initiative, the General Manager of LASEPA, Dr. Tunde Ajayi stated that this year’s competition is open to undergraduates enrolled in all tertiary institutions, both public and private, within Lagos State.
He noted that the essay theme was carefully selected in view of the unique geographical location of Lagos and the increasing need to address transboundary environmental challenges through well-informed and innovative approaches.
Dr. Ajayi emphasised that the competition provides a platform for students to propose practical and innovative solutions that can help mitigate environmental pollution confronting the state both within and from its neighbouring communities.
He added that interested participants are required to complete the registration form through the Google link https://t.co/foljw8jNR8 and submit a one-page personal profile demonstrating their experience in the environmental space.
Dr. Ajayi further disclosed that the top 20 shortlisted essays will qualify for the preliminary stage of the competition, while the best 10 essays out of the shortlisted 20 will eventually qualify for an open debate competition at the grand finale, where participants will present and defend their ideas on the same theme.
The Grand finale of the competition, according to him, comes up on Tuesday, June 9, 2026, at the Adeyemi-Bero Auditorium, Alausa, Ikeja-Lagos
Submission of entries closes on Friday, May 8, 2026. Prizes for the competition include: a first prize of ₦2,000,000, a second prize of ₦1,000,000, and a third prize of ₦500,000, in addition to consolation prizes for other finalists.
Also speaking, the Director of Partnership, Grants Management and Innovations, LASEPA, Mrs. Shonibare Olabisi encouraged students in both private and public institutions across the state to seize the opportunity to contribute to environmental sustainability.
She stated that the initiative reflects LASEPA’s commitment to youth engagement and capacity building, adding that “This platform is not only about competition but about nurturing future environmental leaders who will drive impactful changes.
"We urge all eligible students to participate actively and bring forward ideas that can shape policies and interventions for a more sustainable and pollution-free Lagos.”

In Lagos, every minute counts — and every journey tells a story.
For years, that story was about delays, long waits, and crowded rides. But today, a new chapter is unfolding.
With the Red Line’s 24-car trains, movement is faster, waiting time is shorter, and every trip feels more organised. From early morning hustle in Agege to busy stops in Mushin and Ikeja, Lagosians can now move with ease and certainty.
This is more than a train ,it’s progress on track, built for the people, moving the city forward.
