Does Generative AI Save Time? See the Survey Details.
More workers are using generative AI. The ones already using it are leaning on it more heavily and they say it’s saving them more time.
The Generative Artificial Intelligence Adoption Tracker uses data from a national survey of workers to learn how fast and how intensely they’re adopting AI technology. Economists Alexander Bick, Adam Blandin and David Deming built the tracker, and their data are now freely available in FRED.
What do the data show? Measures of AI usage are trending steadily upward:
• The share of workers using AI grew from 28.2% in 2024 to 39.2% in mid-2026.
• The share of work hours they used AI grew from 4.1% to 6.3%.
• The share of work hours saved by using AI grew from 1.6% to 2.2%.
These numbers suggest AI is not just a novelty; it's starting to free up real work hours. If this trend holds, generative AI could show up in broader productivity statistics in the years ahead.
