Amnesty International Nigeria strongly condemns the horrifying public flogging of Godspower Okedi in Emevor Community, Isoko North Local Government Area of Delta State @DSGovernment, simply for openly criticising and questioning those in power about an abandoned project. @RtHonSheriff

A verified video circulating on social media shows local community members holding Godspower Okedi violently to the ground and flogging him with whips and piece of wood, and trampling on him with the aim of inflicting maximum physical harm. The victim was punished unlawfully for demanding accountability; by asking why an infrastructure project meant to develop his community was abandoned. Delta state is littered with abandoned projects.

This act of violence is a violation of human rights and a direct attack on freedom of expression. It also shows increasing tyranny at the states level, with governors enabling atrocities shamelessly. Any person has right to complain about poor infrastructure, ask questions about public funds, and demand better governance without fear of physical violence, torture, intimidation or humiliation.

The trend of human rights atrocities in Delta State are disturbing, as local leaders and state-aligned figures are using abuse of power to shrink civic space and shut down critics and whistleblowers. When local authorities resort to violence to cover up failed or abandoned projects, they encourage corruption and undermine the rule of law.

Amnesty International calls on the Nigerian authorities to investigate this horrific attack on freedom of expression by minions of people in power.

Nigeria’s constitution guarantees freedom of expression and protects citizens from cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment. The authorities must act swiftly to uphold these rights and prove that nobody, no matter their position, is above the law.

The criminal activities of Simon Ekpa, siblings of iniquity, and those supporting them from behind are the reason numerous innocent IPOB members and Igbo youths are being sentenced to 40 years in Nigerian prisons.

MASS EXODUS OF FULANI HERDSMEN FROM NIGERIA

Fulani herdsmen from Nigeria, in their hundreds with over 2 million cattle and sheep are passing through the Mambilla Plateau in Sardauna Local Government Area of Taraba State, heading to the neighbouring Republic of Cameroon and the Central African Republic.

Reports have it that these Fulani herdsmen, who used to reside across the South-Eastern and some parts of North-Central Nigeria, decided to embark on a mass exodus to save their lives and cattle from the tribal militias targeting them under the pretext of hunting down criminals.

Eyewitness reports indicate that for weeks now, the herders have been spotted traversing through the Mayo-Ndaga axis in Taraba State, heading to the Republic of Cameroon, the Central African Republic, Gabon, and elsewhere, where their lives and animals will be safe from the manhunt allegedly being carried out by tribal militias targeting Fulani people.

Fulani Women, children, and the elderly are also spotted moving on foot or riding on the backs of pack animals, including donkeys and bulls accompanying the cattle, as they journey toward their destinations.

The former commander of “Ebubeagu” in Ebonyi state, popularly known as Japan, has been arrested in Enugu state on a kidnapping case.

Japan, apprehended by the Nigerian military, has been presenting himself as a neighborhood watch member in Enugu using that in carrying out many kidnapping cases before meeting his Waterloo

Japan was a right hand man of Dave Umahi and that leads Dave Umahi to appointed him as the commander of “Ebubeagu” in Ebonyi state and he carried out numerous atrocities in Ebonyi and fled to Emene in Enugu state after the court dissolved “Ebubeagu” in Ebonyi state .

Even her family likely wants her dead. The Qur’an depicts Abraham saying to his non-Muslim relatives: “We have done with you. And there has arisen between us and you hostility and hatred forever, until you believe in Allah alone.” (60:4).

The death penalty for apostasy is part of Islamic law. It’s based on the Qur’an: “They wish you would disbelieve as they disbelieved so you would be alike. So do not take from among them allies until they emigrate for the cause of Allah. But if they turn away, then seize them and kill them wherever you find them and take not from among them any ally or helper.” (Qur’an 4:89)

A hadith depicts Muhammad saying: “Whoever changed his Islamic religion, then kill him” (Bukhari 9.84.57). The death penalty for apostasy is part of Islamic law according to all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence.

This is still the position of all the schools of Islamic jurisprudence, both Sunni and Shi’ite. Sheikh Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the most renowned and prominent Muslim cleric in the world, has stated: “The Muslim jurists are unanimous that apostates must be punished, yet they differ as to determining the kind of punishment to be inflicted upon them. The majority of them, including the four main schools of jurisprudence (Hanafi, Maliki, Shafi’i, and Hanbali) as well as the other four schools of jurisprudence (the four Shiite schools of Az-Zaidiyyah, Al-Ithna-‘ashriyyah, Al-Ja’fariyyah, and Az-Zaheriyyah) agree that apostates must be executed.”

Qaradawi also once famously said: “If they had gotten rid of the apostasy punishment, Islam wouldn’t exist today.”

Amnesty International is deeply concerned by purported directives attributed to Mr Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice regarding the forthcoming national elections of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA).

The Nigerian authorities must respect the independence of the NBA @NigBarAssoc and refrain from any direct or indirect interference in its internal affairs.

According to the NBA, the purported directives include the disbandment of the Electoral Committee of the Nigerian Bar Association (ECNBA), the postponement of the elections, the termination of the current election service provider, the establishment of a caretaker committee, the introduction of National Identification Number (NIN) verification for voters, and the "recalibration" of the NBA Constitution to remove universal suffrage.

The scheduled election of the NBA's national officers must proceed as planned. Any attempt by the federal government to dictate, control or interfere with the governance and electoral processes of the association would constitute an unjustifiable attack on the independence of the legal profession, the rule of law and civic space in Nigeria.

The Nigerian Bar Association is an independent professional body, not an agency or department of government. The federal government has no legal authority to issue directives on how the association conducts its elections or manages its internal affairs. Any such interference would be inconsistent with Nigerian Constitution 1999 (as amended) and the country's obligations under international human rights law, including the rights to freedom of association and self-governance of professional organisations.

Amnesty International calls on the Nigerian authorities to immediately withdraw any such directives, respect the autonomy and independence of the Nigerian Bar Association, uphold the rule of law, and ensure that its elections are conducted freely, fairly and without intimidation or political interference.

Ensuring the independence of the legal profession would advance the rule of law and prevent abuse of state power.
