Oh, so I can use "bro" and "dude" as gender neutral terms and nobody bats an eye; but when I try to use "girl" or "ladies" as gender neutral terms suddenly every single man addressed feels the urge to remind me of their gender as if they think I had somehow forgotten??

Ideally. Men understand it is not ideal for them to go into the ladies room, even with kids. But their children, daughters will be safer and more comfortable in that ladies room. It's not all, always about other people's feelings. A dad in a ladies room DOES NOT wanna be there. They do it for their daughters. If a lady in there offers to help, in order for the father to exit, that is ideal for all. But that usually occurs after women are already offended he's there. Most will see the problem and help correct it. The father can refuse the help of course. But most won't, glad to defuse the strangeness. A mom puts herself in a more dangerous situation entering a men's room for her sons. A young boy in a stall in a ladies room is no threat to the women and girls there.
Did people forget we are a species of ape? There's power dynamics. There's animal instincts. There's social norms. There's inherent male and female aggression levels and sexual dynamics. 99 percent safe is better than 80 percent safe, especially when dealing with situations involving kids. Even if the danger isn't really all that real, if there's any perception of danger, a parent has got to behave accordingly and sometimes, go into a bathroom of the opposite gender.
