🌀 Typhoon Bavi is not currently affecting the Yaeyama Islands, but conditions are expected to deteriorate late this week as the powerful cyclone approaches from the east. Current forecasts from the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) and the Joint Typhoon Warning Center indicate the greatest impacts are expected Friday into Saturday, July 10–11, with the storm forecast to pass very near or across the Yaeyama Islands, including Ishigaki, Iriomote, Taketomi, Yonaguni, and the surrounding islands, before continuing toward Taiwan and eastern China.

🌀 Forecast Intensity
💨 Maximum sustained winds: 105 knots (120 mph / 195 km/h) near the center as the typhoon approaches the Yaeyama Islands.

🌀 Expected Impacts Across the Yaeyama Islands
🌧️ Rainfall: 200–400 mm (8–16 inches), with locally higher amounts capable of producing flash flooding and landslides.

🌊 Storm Surge: 1–3 meters (3–10 feet) of coastal inundation is possible in vulnerable low-lying coastal areas, especially near high tide.

🌊 Wave Heights: 8–12 meters (26–39 feet), producing phenomenal seas and life-threatening surf.

💨 Wind Damage: Typhoon-force winds may down trees and power lines, damage roofs, and cause structural damage to weaker buildings.

🚗 Travel: Ferry cancellations, flight disruptions, and road closures are possible throughout the island chain.

🔌 Infrastructure: Scattered to widespread power outages, communication interruptions, and localized agricultural damage are possible.

🌀 Residents and visitors throughout the Yaeyama Islands should use the remaining days before the storm's arrival to complete preparations, secure outdoor items, and closely monitor forecasts and instructions from local authorities.

Tank Beach in Saipan is typically known for its pristine sands, vibrant waters, and peaceful atmosphere. Today, however, it is the complete opposite: 20-foot waves are battering the coastline and are expected to intensify as Super Typhoon Bavi nears the island. I had the chance to speak with Glenn Policare, a local resident since 1993, who noted that preparations for this storm have been incredibly significant. It is clear that no one is letting their guard down after the island was hit by Super Typhoon Sinlaku back in April.
