@cdrsalamander@brentdsadler Great podcast . I conduct ISM audits in US flag vessels @brentdsadler is right on target. The shortage of unlicensed is severe . There are training challenges as it eats into time management. Mariners are required to train on a frequent basis and are not compensated and quit.

@AWOAdvocacy@mercoglianos The ships that get waivers most probably are weak in complying with US EPA regulations , security regulations, specific 33 and 46 CFR regulations that apply to US vessels . Does the USCG address the gaps between their rules and our rules ?
@johnkonrad@mercoglianos USCG rejected my legitimate MSC sea time for upgrade to Chief Mate in 1985 . They have not changed. Mariners have no recourse and it is said we are not subject to military rules. Military USCG decided I was unworthy of an upgrade.

This justifies the question โWhat is next ? โ Foreign mariners/owners have no right to be in our domestic trade. These vessels technically must obey US domestic laws. They are uninspected vessels imo.
@ben_didonato@johnkonrad They kicked ABS survey off of LCS after 5 years. Blamed it on funding. Truth was they hate every third party that has good advice.
@carolineccurtis Bottom line is they are taking US jobs and potential jobs. We will have no Merchant Marine left if the Jones Act is compromised. Foreign owners and US investors who could care less about US Mariners will be calling the shots on safety. USCG will have their hands full .
@brentdsadler Good, detailed analysis. Money is always the issue. USMS reconstitution would take a long time. MSC and MARAD have been stale in innovation since after the end of the Desert Storm. GW Bush depleted Maritime resources. Logistic fleets started to shrink due to money.
