@kenny_masuud@AskMichaelTaiwo The money will help Nimah towards completing her travel plans to the Deep Learning Indaba Conference. This will be Nimah’s first time attending and it would be really impactful for her career.
We’re halfway there! 🚀
25 brilliant African researchers from @ml_collective have been accepted to attend @DeepIndaba 2025 — a life-changing opportunity to learn, collaborate, and present impactful AI projects.
@DeepIndaba is more than an event, it’s a chance to learn, connect, and build as African researchers.
25 of us from @ml_collective are fundraising to get there.

I’ve now been accepted to Deep Learning Indaba 2025. Although I wasn’t offered a travel grant, MLC stepped up to support me and 24 other members. As most of us are not affiliated with any lab, attending DLI 2025 will present tremendous opportunities for us.

Recently, I attended the Machine Learning Summer School in Senegal, where I had the chance to connect with leading researchers in causality. I also presented our work "Towards Robust Generalization in African AI" to be submitted to a neurips workshop.

To me, @ml_collective is a cheat code to becoming a researcher from a constraint environment. Many of its members are now PhD students at top labs across Europe and North America, people who, not long ago, were in the same position

Yes, the opportunity gap has less to do about talent and much to do about how said talent is developed.
@ml_collective believed. @DeepIndaba provides the platform.
Let’s help 25 people get that development.

I will be presenting a poster titled “Understanding LLM Reasoning Capabilities through Rebus Puzzles” at DLI @DeepIndaba 2025.
Other early-career researchers like me would also be showcasing their work, and your support, no matter how small, will go a long way

These helped shape my research direction. Fast forward to June, our paper got accepted to this year's ICML 2025 ES_FOMO III workshop.
Albeit complex, research has given me a direction to tackle real-world issues surrounding optimization and efficiency

My first paper submission to the Black in AI workshop at NeurIPS 2024 was brutally rejected (it was that bad).
This helped me retrace my steps to the foundations of research through MLC Nigeria research jams, where I reviewed papers and studied the Harvard CS197 course

REFLECTING ON THE JOURNEY WITH GRATITUDE 🙏🏽
As I look back on how far I have come, I can’t help but thank God for every step of this journey.
Initially, I had no genuine interest in the tech space. However, my twin sister , my strongest support system and constant motivator
Over a year ago, I was new to research without a clearly defined research area. It initially felt ambiguous, with little understanding of the prerequisites for conducting ML research. But @ml_collective gave me the platform to build my foundation. Although before that...

We don’t just dream, we work tirelessly to solve Africa problems with the little resource we have access to. A little donation will help 25 AI researchers attend Indaba to present their works.

@ml_collective has created a space for people like me and so many others to grow, ask questions, and take our first steps into ML research without feeling out of place. That kind of support means everything.
We are HALFWAY there! Thanks to all those who've kindly contributed 🙏🙏
With Indaba <4 weeks away, let's send all the 25 African researchers to their dream conference!

Can curvature-aware regularization tackle the sharp minima problem in deep networks to achieve better generalization?
I hope to present my findings at DLI’25 — and we’re almost halfway there!
Help make it happen.
