மதுரையை ஆளும் பாண்டிய மன்னர் என்று தன்னைத்தானே கருதிக்கொள்ளும் மின்சாரத் துறை அமைச்சர், இம்முறையும் “குடும்ப அறக்கட்டளை” என அழைக்கப்படும் ஒன்றைக் குறித்து, தமது வழக்கம்போலவே பொய்யான கருத்துக்களைப் பேசியுள்ளார். இப்படி ஒவ்வொரு நாளும் தனக்கு அளிக்கப்பட்டுள்ள வரம்பை மீறிச் செயல்படுவதற்கு, முதலமைச்சரின் ஆலோசகர்களில் ‘யார்’, இவ்வளவு உதவுகிறார் என்ற கேள்வி இப்போதும் எழவே செய்கிறது.

முதலாவதாக, அவர் கூறுவதுபோல் எனக்கு சித்தப்பா என்று யாரும் கிடையாது. இரண்டாவதாக, எனது தாத்தாவின் பெயரில் இயங்கும் அந்த அறக்கட்டளையானது பல்வேறு சட்டங்களையும் விதிமுறைகளையும் மீறியுள்ளது. மதுரை மாநகராட்சிக்கு ரூ.2 கோடிக்கும் மேலாகச் சொத்து வரி நிலுவையில் வைத்திருப்பதும் அதில் ஒன்று. இதுகுறித்து நானே கடந்த பத்தாண்டுகளுக்கும் மேலாகப் புகார் அளித்து வருகிறேன்.

அந்த அறக்கட்டளையின் பெயரில் நடக்கும் முறைகேடுகளின் முக்கியக் குற்றவாளி என்று நான் கருதுவது, ஒரு ஆடிட்டர் ஆவார்.

அந்த நபர் மீது ஏற்கனவே குளோபல் டிரஸ்ட் வங்கி, DSQ Software உள்ளிட்ட முறைகேடுகளில் நெருங்கிய தொடர்புடையவர். மேலும், சத்யம் நிறுவன முறைகேட்டுடனான தொடர்பு காரணமாக, PwC India நிறுவனத்தின் தலைவர் பொறுப்பிலிருந்து பதவி விலகுமாறு கட்டாயப்படுத்தப்பட்ட ஒரே நபர் அவர்தான். இந்தியாவின் தீவிரமான நிதி முறைகேடுகள் குறித்த விசாரணை அமைப்பான SFIO மற்றும் அமெரிக்காவின் SEC ஆகியவற்றிலும் அவர் மீது குற்றச்சாட்டுகள் உண்டு.

இப்படி, பல்வேறு குற்றச்சட்டங்களுக்கு உள்ளன அந்த நபருக்கு, சட்ட அமைச்சருடன் திடீரென நெருக்கம் ஏற்படுவதில் வியப்பேதுமில்லை. ஒரே குணம் கொண்டவர்கள் நெருக்கமாவது இயற்கைதான்.

இந்த விவகாரத்தை மக்கள் கவனமாகக் கண்காணிக்க வேண்டும். ஏனெனில், அந்த ஆடிட்டர் உயர் நீதிமன்ற சென்னை மற்றும் மதுரை கிளைகளில் சுமார் இருபதுக்கும் மேற்பட்ட முறை அணுகியும், பல நீதிபதிகளால் வழங்க மறுக்கப்பட்ட அனுமதிகளைச் சட்ட விதிகளுக்குப் புறம்பாகப் பெற வாய்ப்புள்ளது. மதுரையின் மன்னராகத் தன்னை கற்பனை செய்துகொள்பவர், அந்த அறக்கட்டளை மாநகராட்சிக்கு செலுத்த வேண்டிய ரூ.2 கோடிக்கும் அதிகமான நிலுவைச் சொத்து வரியில் ஏதேனும் “கட்டிங்” வாங்கிக்கொண்டு, அதிகாரிகளை கட்டாயப்படுத்தி அனுமதிகளைப் பெற்றுத் தரக்கூடும்.

தமிழ்நாடு முழுவதும் பரவலாகக் காணப்படும் மின்வெட்டால் சாமானிய மக்கள் தினந்தோறும் அவதிக்குள்ளாகிறார்கள். ஆனால், அதற்குத் தீர்வு காண்பதில் உரிய கவனம் செலுத்தாமல், உள்நோக்கத்துடன் தனக்கு வழங்கப்பட்ட அதிகார வரம்பைத் தொடர்ந்து மீறி வரும் இவர், தமிழ்நாட்டின் அரசியல் வரலாற்றிலேயே மிக மோசமான மின்சாரத் துறை அமைச்சராக நினைவுகூரப்படுவார்.

ஐந்து கட்சிகளைத் தாண்டி வந்த நம்பகத்தன்மையற்ற ஒருவருக்கு மின்சாரத் துறையை வழங்கியதோடு கூடுதலாக, சட்டத் துறையையும் வழங்கி, அவரை ஒரு நிழல் “அதிகார மையமாக” செயல்பட மறைமுகமாக அனுமதிப்பது, இந்த அரசின் நிர்வாகத் தோல்வியையே வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது.

𝗗𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗹𝗮𝗶𝗺𝗲𝗿: The entire Kumbabishegam ceremony today, has been directed by the current TVK Government through its Officers without considering any inputs from the Trustees. This has been done in direct contravention of both the relevant Tamil Nadu Acts & Statutes and of multiple rulings of the Madras High Court. I have been forwarded multiple social media posts this morning from devotees complaining of the lack of access to the event. While some of this may have happened under any government, the incumbent government must take full responsibility for today’s shortcomings, given their complete exclusion of the Trustees (who had experience with prior events)from the planning process, and decision to conduct the proceedings with Officers that had no prior experience of similar events.

I am also duty-bound to note that over 95% of the massive efforts undertaken over the past three years to perform this unique renovation – which included the restoration of the fire-damaged Veera Vasantha Rayar Mandapam – were undertaken during the previous DMK Government’s tenure of 2021 to 2026.

அவரது சமூகச் சீர்திருத்த லட்சியங்களையும், நீதிக்கட்சி முன்னெடுத்த சமூகநீதிக் கொள்கைகளையும் அரசியல் களத்தில் இடைவிடாது முன்னெடுத்து, அவற்றைச் சட்டங்களாகவும் திட்டங்களாகவும் உருமாற்றும் நோக்குடன், தந்தை பெரியாரின் தலைமாணாக்கரான பேரறிஞர் அண்ணா அவர்கள் திராவிட முன்னேற்றக் கழகத்தைத் தொடங்கியதும் இதே நாள்தான்.

Just read the recently issued judgment on the Meenakshi Amman Temple Kumbabishegam Case.

So far I have tried to stay detached from the matter for multiple reasons. One of them being that I have found the malodor of the main culprit very distasteful for all the years I have been in public life and hence have tried to stay as far away as possible irrespective of our respective political parties (only one in my case; five, if I am not mistaken, in his case) or positions.

But I must comment now for the sake of truth. The HR&CE Minister and Staff, who have been censured by the High Court in the oral comments from the bench over the course of the hearings (as reported by multiple media houses), and to a lesser extent in the written judgement, are not the real culprits here. They are at worst guilty of being unwarrantedly subservient to a rank opportunist and profoundly unworthy individual.

It is also worth noting that the three women Trustees stood up for their rights under the Act and all judgments. While the two male trustees gave up their rights in the court immediately🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️, and had their rights restored by the women who stood firm. The less said about them the better.

I was pleased to be part of the 3rd CA Sanjiv Kumar Shah Memorial Lecture, organised by the SSA Foundation, on “Democracy, Development & the Future of Governance.”

The theme brought together three deeply connected questions: how we strengthen democratic institutions, expand opportunities through development, and make governance responsive to a rapidly changing world.

My association with the Chartered Accountancy community has continued over the years, and it was especially meaningful to be part of this forum, established in memory of CA Sanjiv Kumar Shah, and to reflect on the values of professional excellence, integrity and institution-building.

My appreciation to the SSA Foundation for sustaining this meaningful forum for reflection and public discourse.

At the Chamber of Commerce & Industry, Thanjavur, I spoke on “Leadership Under Pressure in Business.”

The subject drew on experiences from very different settings in my own journey—from the Lehman Brothers crisis, to building the DMK’s IT organisation, serving as a Minister in government, and using data and experience to understand what changes and what needs to change.

Across these settings, one lesson has remained constant: leadership is tested not when everything is going well, but when circumstances change, uncertainty rises and difficult decisions have to be made. Vision and values provide direction; culture and strong institutions give them continuity; and the willingness to question established ways of working helps organisations adapt.

It was a meaningful opportunity to share these experiences with the business community in Thanjavur and reflect on the challenges of leadership, resilience and change.

I was pleased to be part of the inaugural 42 Degrees Annual Higher Education Leadership Summit in Udaipur, and to deliver the Distinguished Opening Address on “The Stewardship of Institutions — What it takes to remain relevant across generations, leadership transitions and waves of disruption.”

The summit brought together a diverse group of higher education leaders, institution builders, policymakers, industry leaders, investors, and technology and skilling professionals to reflect on the future of Indian higher education.

We are living through a period when institutions across sectors are being asked difficult questions about relevance, accountability, resilience and their ability to adapt to a rapidly changing world. It was valuable to exchange perspectives on these questions and on what it takes to build institutions that remain purposeful and relevant across generations.

Five years ago, on August 16, 2021, @IndianExpress published this interview with me, shortly after I took charge as Tamil Nadu’s Finance & HRM Minister. Social media has a way of bringing such moments back to us.

Reading it again after five years, I find myself reflecting on whether my work in office was consistent with the vision and ambitions I expressed in that conversation.

The interview touched on fiscal responsibility, better use of public resources, data-driven governance, federalism and the balance between a strong Union and empowered States. Over the years that followed, I had the opportunity to engage with each of these issues in practice during my time in government.

Five years later, I find myself wondering: are many of those themes even more relevant today?

Impact After Term | 17 : From Completing Long-Pending Projects to Building Future-Ready IT Infrastructure

For over two decades, ELCOT has played a pivotal role in expanding Tamil Nadu's IT ecosystem beyond Chennai by developing IT parks and Special Economic Zones across Tier-II and Tier-III cities. As global technology companies increasingly sought world-class plug-and-play office spaces, the State announced new ELCOT IT Towers in Sholinganallur (2017) and later in Coimbatore and Tiruchirappalli (2020). However, these projects remained stalled for several years due to administrative delays, environmental clearances and the COVID-19 pandemic.

After assuming office as Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services in 2023, Dr. @ptrmadurai brought the projects under direct review, resolved pending administrative issues and accelerated construction.

The results followed in quick succession. The Tiruchirappalli ELCOT IT Tower (₹59.57 crore; 1.16 lakh sq. ft.) was inaugurated in February 2024, creating infrastructure for 2,800+ IT jobs, strengthening Tiruchirappalli's position as an emerging technology destination.

This was followed by the Coimbatore ELCOT IT Tower (₹158.32 crore; 2.94 lakh sq. ft.) in November 2024, with capacity for 3,500+ IT jobs and , 100% of its office space had already been leased on the very day of inauguration, reflecting strong industry demand.

In February 2026, the Sholinganallur ELCOT IT Tower (₹88.21 crore; 2.33 lakh sq. ft.) was inaugurated, adding infrastructure for another 3,200+ IT jobs, further expanding Chennai's technology ecosystem.

Beyond completing long-pending infrastructure projects, efforts also focused on preparing Tamil Nadu for the next phase of technology-led growth. As Finance Minister, Dr. PTR announced the TN Tech City project in the Tamil Nadu Budget 2023–24, envisioning a world-class technology district to attract global technology companies and investments. This vision was further strengthened at UmagineTN 2025, where the Hon'ble Chief Minister announced a 20 lakh sq. ft. AI-Focused IT Park at Vilankurichi, Coimbatore, aimed at supporting the State's rapidly growing Artificial Intelligence ecosystem.

Together, these initiatives transformed years of pending projects into productive infrastructure. Three ELCOT IT Towers were completed, creating capacity for nearly 9,500 high-quality IT jobs, while new initiatives such as TN Tech City and the AI-Focused IT Park laid the foundation for Tamil Nadu's next chapter as one of India's leading technology and digital innovation hubs.

Impact After Term | 16 : Transforming Madurai into a Regional Technology Hub

Madurai has long stood as one of the world's oldest living cities and a symbol of Tamil civilisation. As the elected representative of Madurai Central, Dr. PTR believed that the city's future should be defined not only by its rich history, but also by technology, innovation and knowledge-based employment. As Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services, he worked towards extending Tamil Nadu's IT growth beyond Chennai, with a special focus on transforming Madurai into a regional technology and innovation hub.

This vision was pursued through a combination of institutional investments, industry partnerships and strategic interventions. Alongside the establishment of the iTNT Hub Regional Centre to nurture Deep Tech innovation in southern Tamil Nadu, sustained efforts attracted new technology companies, enabled existing firms to expand and strengthened Madurai's innovation ecosystem. Today, the Madurai ELCOT SEZ alone supports more than 4,000 IT jobs.

Four landmark initiatives launched in February 2026 by then Hon'ble Chief Minister Thiru. @mkstalin reflected this broader transformation.

Among them was the ₹150 crore Pinnacle Infotech Global Centre of Excellence at the Madurai ELCOT IT Park. Having already created nearly 1,500 local jobs after commencing operations in Madurai in 2023, the company chose the city for the next phase of its AI-enabled Building Information Modelling (BIM) operations—reflecting growing confidence in Madurai's talent pool and technology ecosystem.

Complementing this, the ₹50 lakh HP Centre of Excellence was established at Sri Meenakshi Government Arts College for Women through HP's CSR initiative in partnership with ICT Academy. The centre equips women students from Madurai and neighbouring districts with industry-ready digital skills, helping bridge the gap between education and employment while strengthening the talent pipeline for the region's expanding technology sector.

Pinnacle Infotech also laid the foundation for Tamil Nadu's first dedicated women's residential campus within an IT Special Economic Zone, accommodating around 1,200 women professionals and creating the support infrastructure needed to encourage greater participation of women in the technology workforce.

A long-standing land constraint that had limited industrial expansion was also addressed. When HCLTech sought to expand its operations in Madurai, the availability of suitable land had become a major challenge. Through Dr. PTR's intervention, underutilised land originally allotted to Honeywell was reclaimed and allotted to HCLTech through ELCOT, paving the way for a ₹150 crore expansion project on 2.41 acres at the Ilanthaikulam SEZ. The project is expected to create 1,000 additional technology jobs while transforming idle land into productive investment.

Taken together, these initiatives have helped reshape Madurai's technology landscape. By bringing together global investment, skill development, women's participation and employment generation, they continue to create opportunities for thousands of young people across Madurai and southern Tamil Nadu—an impact that extends well beyond the tenure in which these initiatives were undertaken.

It was a real pleasure to visit the ICAI Bhawan in New Delhi during my recent visit to the capital and reconnect with many old friends from the Institute.

My association with the @theicai spans over a decade, beginning with the S. Vaidhyanatha Aiyar Memorial Lecture in 2013 as a banker at Standard Chartered. Since then, I have had the privilege of interacting with members and students almost every year, as a banker, a retired banker, an MLA, Finance Minister and IT Minister, through conferences, lectures, workshops and capacity-building programmes on subjects ranging from banking and public finance to GST, demonetisation, global trade and economic policy.

This visit came about quite unexpectedly while I was in Delhi on other engagements. Since we couldn't find time to meet separately, friends who where in Delhi for the ICAI Central Council Meeting invited me to the ICAI Bhawan, where I received an exceptionally warm welcome.

The continued friendship and affection of the ICAI fraternity over the years have been truly heartening.

Delighted to attend the UK–India Reception hosted by Lord @uday_nagaraju of Bloomsbury on his appointment to the @UKHouseofLords.

Congratulations to Lord Nagaraju on this well-deserved honour. His appointment is a matter of pride for the Indian diaspora, and I wish him every success in further strengthening the longstanding partnership between India and the United Kingdom.

Though Uday had already hosted me and my son at the House of Lords earlier in the month, I was happy to attend his reception in Delhi late July as it provided an opportunity to meet with friends like former CJI U. U. Lalit (we spoke at a series of lectures together in New York and Harvard in 2025), and the dynamic @KTRBRS who graciously joined us for a repeat picture.

வரலாற்றில் என்றும் நிலைத்திருக்கும் அவர்தம் அளப்பரிய சாதனைகளை நினைவுகூரும் இவ்வேளையில், அவை அனைத்தையும் விட என் உள்ளத்தில் மேலோங்கி நிற்பது, சக மனிதர்களிடம் அவர் வெளிப்படுத்திய அளவற்ற அன்பும் பாசமும்தான்.

ஆட்சி - நிர்வாகம், கலை, இலக்கியம், தனிமனித உறவுகள் என வாழ்வின் ஒவ்வொரு தளத்திலும் அவர் வெளிப்படுத்திய மனிதநேயமும் அன்பும் என்றும் நமக்கு வழிகாட்டியாக அமையட்டும்.

The arrest of the Leader of the Opposition, Thiru @Udhaystalin, just a day before the Government is set to present its first Budget deserves the strongest condemnation. Attempting to silence the principal voice of the Opposition ahead of the Budget Session reflects not strength, but insecurity.

நாளை அரசு தனது முதல் நிதிநிலை அறிக்கையை தாக்கல் செய்யவுள்ள நிலையில், இன்று அவசரகதியில் சட்டப்பேரவை எதிர்க்கட்சித் தலைவர் திரு. உதயநிதி ஸ்டாலின் அவர்கள் கைது செய்யப்பட்டிருப்பது வன்மையான கண்டனத்திற்குரியது. நிதிநிலை அறிக்கை மீதான விவாதத்திற்கு முன்னதாகவே எதிர்க்கட்சியின் பிரதான குரலை ஒடுக்க முயல்வது, ஆளும் அரசின் பலவீனத்தையும் பாதுகாப்பற்ற மனநிலையையுமே வெளிப்படுத்துகிறது.

Distinguished Lecture Series in the United Kingdom | III. London

The final engagement of this UK lecture series was held at @lincolnsinn, London, with a lecture on "The Soul of the Republic: The Constitution and India's Democratic Future."

The evening concluded with an engaging fireside conversation alongside my good friend Dr. @ShashiTharoor, MP, moderated by Prof. (Dr.) C. Raj Kumar, followed by the JGU London Alumni Meet.

The strength of a constitutional democracy ultimately depends not only on its constitutional text, but on the resilience of its institutions, the vitality of public debate, and the commitment of each generation to uphold constitutional values.

This series marks another chapter in my continuing association with @JindalGlobalUNI, building on earlier engagements in India and the United States. It has been a privilege to exchange ideas with students, scholars, alumni and the wider academic community across Cambridge, Oxford and London.

The second engagement in the series took place at Somerville College, @UniofOxford, with a Distinguished Lecture and Fireside Conversation on "Our Living Constitution: Why India's Founding Vision Still Matters."

The Constitution endures not because it has remained unchanged, but because it has evolved while remaining anchored in its foundational values of justice, liberty, equality, fraternity, secularism, and federalism. Yet there remains much to be done if we are to fully realise the vision of the Constituent Assembly.

Distinguished Lecture Series in the United Kingdom | I. Cambridge

It was a pleasure to open this lecture series at Christ's College, @Cambridge_Uni, as part of the Distinguished Lecture Series organised by @JindalGlobalUNI.

The discussion explored "AI and the Future of Democracy: Can Institutions Keep Up?"—a subject that is rapidly moving from a technological debate to a fundamental question of democratic governance. While AI presents new challenges to democratic institutions, in many ways it can also improve governance, strengthen public service delivery, and thereby strengthen citizens' faith in democracy. During my tenure as Tamil Nadu's Minister for Information Technology and Digital Services, we made meaningful progress in harnessing AI to improve governance and deliver better outcomes for citizens.

The thoughtful engagement from students, scholars, alumni and members of the wider academic community made for a stimulating discussion on one of the defining public policy challenges of our time.
