Today, @cedgg_2001 & @RiftBudgetHub paid a courtesy visit to the @TurkanaCountyKE , where the team was received by the Office of the County Secretary on behalf of H.E. the Governor. The engagement provided an opportunity to introduce the initiative, discuss its objectives, and explore collaboration with the County Government in advancing budget transparency, meaningful public participation, and accountability, with particular focus on the health sector. The County Government officially welcomed @cedgg_2001 and the @RiftBudgetHub to Turkana County and committed to supporting the successful implementation of the initiative through close collaboration. The Office of the County Secretary further undertook to convene a follow-up meeting with key county departments, including planning, budgeting, health, and public participation, to deliberate on the proposed partnership and ensure all relevant institutions are brought on board to support coordinated implementation.

I received Amnesty International’s Secretary General, Agnes Callamard and her delegation including George Morara, Executive Director, Amnesty International Kenya at my office. We discussed the human rights situation in Africa including in the Sudan and the centrality of Kenya’s peace building and peace keeping role. They presented me with their latest report on Sudan, ‘City under Siege, Children under Fire’, which documents the Al Fasher atrocities. I affirmed to the delegation Kenya’s firm support for an arms embargo and urgent ceasefire in Sudan. @ForeignOfficeKE @GenevaMissionKE @AmnestyKenya

For years, many women in West Pokot have continued to endure poor roads, water shortages, understaffed dispensaries, and inadequate medical equipment without knowing that they have a constitutional voice and a role in influencing how public resources are planned and allocated. Limited access to information and exclusion from budget processes have left many communities struggling with service delivery challenges that could otherwise be addressed through meaningful public participation.

Today in Sigor, West Pokot County, the @RiftBudgetHub convened a training for Women Budget Champions aimed at strengthening women’s understanding of governance, budgeting, and public finance management processes so they can actively engage in decisions that affect their daily lives.

The participants were taken through the structure of county government, the functions of both county and national governments, and the principles of public finance management. They also explored the county budget process, including the stages of the budget cycle, key timelines, lead actors, and critical decision-making points within the budgeting process.

Women in Lomut Ward, West Pokot County, today demonstrated the power of information in shaping active citizenship during the @RiftBudgetHub budget cell forum. For many participants, it was their first encounter with county budgeting, yet after the sensitization session, they expressed a clear understanding of the budget cycle and how public resources are planned, allocated, and used.

The forum also revealed a major gap in civic participation, as many women shared that they had never attended any public participation forum and were unaware of their role in influencing development priorities. However, once they connected everyday challenges in their communities to decisions made through budgeting processes, they made a firm commitment to begin attending future forums and presenting their views, including pooling resources to support representatives where necessary.

The @EnviClimateC_Ke in collaboration with the @UNDPKenya and @UNFPAKen, has successfully concluded a nationwide data collection exercise conducted from 29th March to 10th April 2026 to assess loss and damage triggered by rising water levels and backflow in the Rift Valley lakes and Lake Victoria.

Led by the Climate Change Directorate Kenya’s National Focal Point to the Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage the exercise deployed trained enumerators across climate-vulnerable hotspots to gather critical “proof of loss.” This initiative is a key step in advancing Kenya’s bid to access support under the FRLD through the Barbados Implementation Modalities (BIM), aimed at addressing the growing livelihood emergency caused by climate-induced flooding.

The data collection covered strategic sites across multiple counties. In Turkana County, enumerators focused on Kalokol, Eliye Springs, Lomekwi, and Ferguson Bay, while in Marsabit County, the exercise covered Loiyangalani, El Molo Bay, Moite, and Layeni.

In Nakuru County, teams documented impacts in Kihoto Settlement, Kamere Beach, Mwariki, and Barut. Around Lake Victoria, enumerators assessed 16 urban and peri-urban hotspots including Dunga Beach, Hippo Point, and the West Kano Irrigation Scheme.

The evidence gathered highlights the scale and severity of displacement, livelihood disruption, and environmental degradation affecting communities in these regions.

This robust, evidence-based approach strengthens Kenya’s case for international climate finance and underscores the urgent need for targeted interventions to support affected populations.

Oversight of the exercise was provided by Thomas Lerenten, Samuel Muchiri, and James Thonjo, alongside leads from partner organizations.

The successful completion of this exercise marks a significant milestone in Kenya’s climate resilience journey, positioning the country as a leader in evidence-based advocacy for loss and damage resources while reinforcing its commitment to protecting livelihoods and communities most affected by rising water levels. #LossandDamageFund #RisingWaterLevels

Yesterday, at the County Assembly of Nakuru, we engaged Members of the County Assembly from the Labour Committee under the Time to Care Project. The engagement sought to deepen understanding of the care work landscape in Nakuru County and to advance policy reforms that recognize, value, and protect domestic and care workers.

Central to the discussion was the push for the development of a Nakuru County Care Policy that formally acknowledges domestic workers’ rights and their vital contribution to the county’s social and economic wellbeing.

Today in Nakuru County, we took part in a public participation forum on the proposed ratification of ILO Conventions C189 and C190, creating space for domestic workers and stakeholders to share lived experiences and policy concerns.

We were honoured to be graced by the Labour Commissioner, Madam Hellen Apiyo, and to host engaging panel discussions unpacking what these conventions mean for decent work and safe, inclusive workplaces.

A key highlight from the discussions was a strong call for the recognition and inclusion of domestic workers with disabilities, with participants emphasizing the need for equal protection, dignity, and tailored labour safeguards within domestic work settings.

These voices were heard, and the dialogue marked an important step towards strengthening labour protections. We remain hopeful that this process will lead to more inclusive policies and improved working conditions for all domestic workers in Kenya.
