Advocating for a humane approach to school accountability. Calling for changes in the philosophy, culture and structures which underpin school inspection.
@dave_mcpartlin Reforms have been helpful because they confirm that OFSTED can’t be saved. Close it, and the savings would be way more than the headline £185.5 million because of the vast resources every school poor into defending themselves. Think what schools could achieve with the saved time?
https://t.co/BNDkBQfxkG “Findings show preventable harms.” Response: “Ofsted exists to raise standards for children" Yet there's no evidence provided to support their claim. Consultation with stakeholders lacked openness, questions restricted responses that could be provided.
@ateachertype@mathsstarters@Headteacherchat And then come back and mark it's own homework? There is a lot of potential for things going wrong there and a reason ofsted is not school improvement as opposed to a driver for school improvement
I agree. There needs to be an effective back stop for schools not providing effective learning. Ive written a piece today explaining why David Bell felt inspection should shift in 2005. Some on here will view that negatively but he was trying to signal more propotionate approach.
@PieCorbett@dave_mcpartlin That's one of the key things missing. Their reports are bland, they offer no suggestions of how to improve in the particular setting, they share no sector/setting good practice. They just say do better. It is not difficult to be a good regulator.....unless you are Ofsted.
@dave_mcpartlin Ofsted needs to be a better regulator. Thats not difficult to do if they want to do it. The question is will the SoS make them or will she just ask them to set their home work, do their homework and mark their homework. In which case it will be military grade can kicking
@Yorkshire_Steve@tes@jon_severs Other countries have accountability with a culture of fear and intimidation. In this country ISI do a good job of inspecting independent schools without killing headteachers or driving teachers out of the profession. Ofsted hasn’t been fit for purpose for years.
‘The challenge is not just that the sector has identified too many flaws in the new framework; it’s that Ofsted has not done enough to win the hearts of the sector’: @jon_severs explores dissatisfaction with the inspection regime in the latest Tes Daily ⬇️

It's starting to feel like a foregone conclusion that Ofsted will have to undergo massive change - our profession has put up with it for far too long. Colleagues are running out of resilience and the tanks are almost empty for too many good people.
It didn't last, Zoe. I don't mind admitting that I liked him a lot, was grateful to have the opportunity to have my say and I thought he got it. But then it all got very bullish and the tone changed. I was one of the few people being openly positive & got a lot of grief for doing so. From what I've seen & heard, the wrong people are being listened to and it's doing real damage. And probably worth pointing out that I didn't ask for the picture...
@dave_mcpartlin Trust can’t be demanded - it has to be earned, by being trustworthy. To do this Ofsted would need to demonstrate Competence, Honesty and Reliability (see Onora O’Neill - https://t.co/Vuju5ze2bk…)
Ofsted never tried to win hearts. And when it came to using their heads, they listened to the wrong voices. You don’t rebuild trust by ignoring the people who have to live with the consequences.
@tes@jon_severs The framework IS Ofsted; precisely why the sector has lost faith & trust.
Ofsted has lost its moral compass. EIF takes no account of context; is so complex it ties up schools & inspectors in knots under the guise of ‘ inclusion’ but punitive to schools with disadvantaged pupils.
OFSTED should be a check up, a detailed meet with SLT & a set of advisories with post inspection support
Its shouldn’t be a life or death sword of Damocles grading. Your inspections ruin lives and in some schools ruin the education of the children you leave behind
@LucyMPowell
@ateachertype@Headteacherchat Wouldn’t you need to dial down the high stakes nature of inspection first? And make judgements much more valid, meaningful and useful (move away from grades or metrics and towards narratives)?
@Headteacherchat Give Ofsted the power to help schools, not just run them down. Provide them with discretionary funds to disperse where schools need them, and money for specialist coaches where leadership would benefit from them. Stop punishing schools, start helping them.
