Dan Bello is a classroom teacher in China. He is perfectly suited for the Revolution of the Mind he embarked upon. I attached myself to his Crusade, because he is a constant reminder of the reasons why we fight, & I will tell you why.

Your present-day Nigeria is Imperial China in many ways. You see, “China growth was deliberate; they knew that Western education was the ONLY pathway to success.”

China wasn’t always the success story you see today. It was a closed system, closed to the outside world, until at least 1842.

An earth-shattering event happened. China came to a turning point. They needed sweet revenge. And how best were they going to achieve that? WESTERN EDUCATION!

You see, Western Education saved China.

Following the defeats at the Opium Wars, a few Revolutions & the ‘Century of Humiliation’ that followed, China came to crossroads.

In the aftermath of the Opium Wars, Emperor Puyi (the last emperor to rule all of Imperial China) abdicated his throne. China suffered at the hands of the foreign powers that invaded the Empire a century before. The Empire paid huge taels of silver as (indemnities running into billions of dollars in today’s money) to the foreign powers that invaded it.

To add salt to injury, foreign diplomats lived right outside the Imperial Palace, exempt from taxes. On their knees defeated, the Chinese began to seek for solutions to their woes. Ruler or no ruler, China remained a semi-colonial, semi-feudal state. I SHOULD CONTINUE?

The students at Peking University organized themselves into groups. Many wrote journals to raise awareness to the Asylum China had become. They called the journal the “Nouvelle Jeunesse” in French, or New Youth. They even broke the barricade of the military police, & marched on the Tiananmen Square.

Chinese Emancipation from Western imperialism & oppression was led largely by the youths. Back then in 1872, China sent their first batch of students to the United States & Great Britain (to gain western education). And several decades later, they returned; & “China: Odyssey to Greatness” ignited.

Like China, Nigeria will be no different. The journey already began, but many are not paying attention. Dan Bello is one of Africa’s Change Makers of Nigerian descent. He renovated a classroom in Northern Nigeria with less than N5 million. From his estimation, there are up to 50,000 dilapidated classrooms in the North.

But Northern Nigeria is not alone, you have classrooms in terrible shape in Southern Nigeria as well. What Dan is doing for his region cannot be overemphasized. I think Nigeria can actually win, if young Nigerians come together.

The old politicians have failed, should we fail the next generation as well? While we continue to bicker among ourselves, the politicians get away with everything. What bigotry has divided, education can unite. So I hope to see more lovers of education like Dan (take up the challenge). #FixAClassroom is the hashtag.

See it as your own little way of giving back, CSR is you like. We should saturate Twitter with such videos & photos, & shame the governors. That is if they have any shame left in them. When we do that, perhaps they will start to act.

In the end, Nigeria will win. Be a Dan Bello in your little corner, be a Change Maker.
