UEFA Priced a Kick and a Curse the Same. That’s Not Justice, That’s Bookkeeping.

Read the Lyon–Fenerbahçe verdict once and you might see balance. Read it twice and you see something worse: a disciplinary body that looked at a man kicking a footballer and a footballer running his mouth, and decided the difference between them was worth exactly one match.

Here is what UEFA’s Control, Ethics and Disciplinary Body actually decided.

Antonio Ferreira, Lyon’s goalkeeping coach, came out of the tunnel and kicked Matteo Guendouzi. UEFA charged this under Article 15(1)(g) serious assault. Their words, not mine. The sanction: five matches, two of them suspended for a year. Three matches, in reality. For assault. On a pitch. In front of cameras.

Matteo Guendouzi insulted people. Four matches, two suspended. Two matches, in reality. Plus €50,000.

So the tariff, as UEFA has now written it into the record: putting your boot into another human being costs you one match more than saying something ugly to one. And forty percent of the assault sentence was suspended anyway, as though a body that had just typed the word “serious” wanted to take some of it back before the ink dried.

The fines are, if anything, more revealing. Guendouzi’s mouth: €50,000. Thousands of Lyon supporters throwing objects onto the pitch: €48,000. One man’s words are priced above an entire stand’s projectiles. Whatever UEFA thinks it is protecting, it is not the physical safety of the people on the grass.

None of this is an argument that Guendouzi is innocent. He isn’t. He was charged under three articles and he earned them. Fenerbahçe were fined €95,000 and they earned that too. This is not a plea for special treatment. It is a demand for the one thing a disciplinary system exists to do: rank offences by their gravity and sanction them accordingly. A body that compresses assault and abuse into a one-match spread has abandoned that function. What’s left is not jurisprudence. It’s a spreadsheet with everyone’s name on it, so nobody can say they were ignored.

Then there is Mason Greenwood. €30,000 and a suspended match under Article 11(2)(b) “violating the basic rules of decent conduct.” The most elastic clause in European football, a phrase broad enough to fit whatever the panel decides it should fit on the day. UEFA has never been required to explain, in reasoned and repeatable terms, what specific act crossed that line and why. Until it does, 11(2)(b) is not a rule. It is a lever.

And this is the rot at the centre of it: UEFA publishes outcomes, not reasoning. Numbers arrive, clubs pay, players sit, and the logic connecting the offence to the sanction is never made public in any form that could be tested, compared, or used to predict the next case. A legal system you cannot predict is not a legal system. It is discretion wearing a badge.

Fenerbahçe are right to go to the Appeals Body. But the appeal should aim higher than two matches for Guendouzi. The question to put to UEFA is the one it has not answered and clearly hoped nobody would ask:

Explain the gap. Explain why serious assault and verbal abuse landed one match apart. Explain why one player’s insults cost more than a crowd’s projectiles. Show the reasoning, or admit there wasn’t any.

Football does not need UEFA to be harsher. It needs UEFA to be coherent. On this file, it was neither — it was merely busy, handing out penalties in every direction so that the total looked even, hoping nobody would weigh them against each other.
