Frantically fixing a confusing product caused by frantic shipping is just more of the same.
Pause and step back. Get the team clear on what you’re building and why. Have clarity to guide the shape, what ships and what doesn’t.
Quality is a way of working, not a cleanup sprint.
I've long wished that online mapping services were far richer and higher-density. They elide so much detail today! We have gloriously high-DPI screens... I want to wallow in cartographic filigree. AI of course now makes this possible: https://t.co/fRIivTYqt1
@benspringwater@drbarnard@finkd Everyone else is making good points about Apple’s release frequency. I think that’ll play a huge part against their favor too.
Still though, if AI evolves in some way we dont expect, its possible Apple still wins in the end, along with Google, since both are closer to the metal.
@benspringwater@drbarnard@finkd For those reasons, it’s possible an OpenAI or a Meta will always be a step ahead for many reasons because they’re less careful.
The problem is Apple is a careful company. More so than any other company in tech. They’re as careful as medical device makers.
AI is not easy to provide carefully.
I can’t imagine Apple providing an AI service that lets you summarize the key points of a book, for example, because they’re more careful about copyright laws than these AI labs are.
it’s insanely fun when you find ppl who will endlessly riff with you about virtually anything.
like something stupid, profound, maybe something even offensive, a half baked idea, or just complete garbage. you just keep tossing thoughts back & forth forever. this is one of the most underrated forms of compatibility.
if you have friends like these it makes ordinary time feel unusually alive.
& if you have a relationship like this it’s even more valuable cuz most of life is thousands of random dinners, car rides, walks, errands, & nights on the couch. if the two of you can make basically anything entertaining to each other you’ve solved a surprisingly large part of the problem.
Design based on best practices is not intentional Design, it is design based on best practices. There's an established recipe and a clear, logical path to follow. Most of the difficult decisions have already been made for you.
Best practices are just accumulated answers to shared problems from the past.
Intentional Design begins with questioning whether those answers apply to the problem you're trying to solve.
Intentional Design means every decision has a reason. A reason you specifically discovered and defined.
Sometimes that reason may lead you straight to established practices. That's ok. But sometimes it means you abandon them entirely. This is usually where something unique and exciting happens.
The important distinction is whether you made the decision consciously yourself or simply inherited it.
