Happy first rescueversary to darling Pips! Our plucky little giraffe folded right into Kaluku life – this first clip was taken shortly after her rescue – and remains just as comfortably settled today.

Her rescue was quite an ordeal. After losing her mother, Pips spent several days fending for herself, furtively appearing for water before evaporating back into the bush. By the time we caught up with her, she was running on her very last reserves.

A year on, ‘Pipsi’, as she's knows to her Keepers, is thriving – and there is so much more to come.

It was revealed that Dolly Parton was secretly battling cancer but she didn't say anything and instead released this song as one of her last to raise funds for children with cancer. Even while she was sick she was still thinking about others. I’m absolutely devastated.

Raising a single orphaned elephant can take upwards of a decade. Our founder, Dame Daphne Sheldrick, was the first person to successfully hand-raise a milk dependent orphaned African elephant, and the husbandry she pioneered guides the rehabilitation of every calf we rescue.

More than 300 orphan elephants have now grown up in our care, each one guided by Keepers towards a healthy adulthood and acceptance by wild herds.
