I've always told my PhD students that a PhD is a marathon and not a sprint. Now that Sabastian Sawe has run the London Marathon in under 2 hours, I'll need to think of something else to tell them.
Call for Papers | Special Issue in Systems
I am pleased to announce that I am serving as Co-Guest Editor, for an upcoming Special Issue in Systems (MDPI):
"The Role of AI and Digital Technologies in Managing Sustainable Manufacturing in Complex Market Environments"
https://t.co/qTdiC40Zqq
In an era characterized by heightened market volatility, resource constraints, and escalating sustainability imperatives, manufacturing systems must evolve beyond traditional efficiency paradigms toward architectures that are adaptive, resilient, and sustainability-driven. This Special Issue seeks to consolidate rigorous, interdisciplinary research examining how advanced digital technologies and systems-based approaches can enable robust sustainable manufacturing within increasingly complex and uncertain operating environments.
We welcome contributions related (but not limited) to:
•Dynamic capabilities and resilient strategies for sustainable manufacturing in VUCA contexts.
•Decision-support systems integrating AI and IoT for real-time sustainability optimization under uncertainty.
•Circular economy business models designed for supply chain volatility and disruptive markets.
•Governance, performance measurement and stakeholder management frameworks for complex sustainability transitions.
•Case studies on successfully managing the trilemma of cost, sustainability and resilience.
•Policy and regulatory readiness and frameworks for AI-enabled sustainable manufacturing across complex and volatile market environments.
•Adaptive regulation and policy innovation (including anticipatory policy approaches) for AI-driven sustainable manufacturing in complex markets and rapidly evolving global value chains.
This Special Issue belongs to the Systems Engineering section of Systems (ISSN 2079-8954).
📅 Manuscript submission deadline: 20 October 2026
I am delighted to be working alongside Dr Lampros Litos AFHEA, MIET; Dr. Shoaib Sarfraz; Dr. Franklin Maduko; and Dr. Khadija Tahera as co-Guest Editors.
If your research aligns with these themes, we encourage you to consider submitting your work. We also appreciate you sharing this call within your networks.

Great to see my friend and brother, Dr @meetmitt_ Mitt Okorie. Brilliant mind & research academic. Happy New Year, Boss. And everyone.

So I built a 5-step pipeline:
1. Student drafts the skeleton with me
2. PhD student adds analysis
3. Postdoc reviews methods
4. I edit only the argument
5. Everyone owns a section
Result?
I went from 15 hours per paper to 3.
My team went from waiting on me to shipping without me.
No heroes required.
Just a system that works when you're not in the room.
Your lab doesn't need a hero PI.
It needs a publishing system.
I spent 10 years editing every draft myself.
Every comma.
Every citation.
Every paragraph that made no sense.
Then I realized something.
The bottleneck wasn't my team.
It was me.
Pleased to share that our #OpenAccess paper on design for remanufacturing has been published on the Business, Strategy & the Environment, Q1, 13.3 Impact Factor
Many thanks to my co-authors at Exeter, Surrey, Virginia Tech & Strathclyde.

Great time at the @RAEngNews Awardee Excellence Community conference at 🏴. Had to find the 2-3 days so I could attend it— glad I did. It’s priceless, the opportunity to connect with colleagues & learn about the innovation going on in their space— academic, industry & policy.
“You, our extended community of talented engineers, are vital to our future”. Our President, Sir John Lazar, recorded a special message for attendees ahead of our annual Awardee Excellence Community Conference taking place today in Glasgow.
