Cashflow 101: Balance the Equation.

Running a small business takes a lot of faith and hope. The pain of watching a critical sale slip through your fingers is painful. The pain of watching your best employee tender resignation for better prospects elsewhere is gut-wrenching. And worse of all, the pain of watching the Landlord double jack up the rent, sucking up the life out of your small enterprise is of utmost agony. All these and more, I have experienced.

However, nothing suffocates a business like poor cashflows do. Usually, it's a situation where the business does not generate enough cash to meet its operating expenses. Most people don't realize that a business can go burst even when it is profitable!
This happens when entrepreneurs fail to work on having enough money coming in time to pay enough money going out. In other words, if you are unable to pay your workers in time because your clients are not paying in time they will eventually quit on you.

Cashflow management is so critical to running a small business or any business for that matter that I have called it "The malaria of small business". In simple terms make sure that the people that have to pay you pay you first before you pay the one you have to pay.

Ironically, my experience regarding managing cash flow has put me in some kind of conundrum. I am a good man and therefore, I should pay the people I have to pay in time.  On the other hand, people expect me to understand when they delay my payments because I am a good man. This creates an excruciating problem.

Even on an individual level, you have to pay attention to when you will have money coming in and when you will have to make payments. It's an equation you don't want to get wrong.
