During a single year, Syria moved from its most severe drought in around 36 years to destructive floods on the Euphrates. Our new policy brief examines the country's environmental and climate pressures, and the political risks they carry for its transition.
The United States removes Syria from the ITAR list of countries subject to a comprehensive policy of denial for defense trade licenses and approvals.

Japan has lifted asset freezes and other restrictions on 16 Syrian entities, including the defense and interior ministries, as Tokyo reviews sanctions imposed on Syria since 2011.

Japan has partially lifted sanctions on Syria, removing 16 entities from its sanctions list, including financial institutions and oil companies.
The move aims to support Syria’s reconstruction and stability after the fall of the Assad family’s rule in December 2024.
This is so gutting. The white peak of the Matterhorn is the quintessential symbol of Switzerland, now stripped of its snow and glaciers. Meanwhile, Albert Rösti, our far-right minister of energy, environment and transport, is a climate-denying fossil-fuel lobbyist. Fun times.
Syria has begun rehabilitating Latakia International Airport, a step aimed at restoring passenger flights and bringing the facility back into operation, the country’s civil aviation chief said.

A 23-year-old Congolese cyclist died while cycling across Africa to promote peace in D.R. Congo.
Miguel Masaisai had cycled more than 6,700 km of his planned 14,000-km “Pedals for Peace” journey when he was killed in a car crash.
Syrian social media timelines are flooded with a new kind of ad: apartments and houses. But the prices are way off and not affordable for people with low income.
Prices have gone through the roof. In some cases reaching $1,200 USD per square meter. That's higher than in Europe.🧵
📢 My op-ed in @thehill is out:
The piece answers a paradox: many Uyghurs overseas continue to deal with detained relatives & transnational repression.
Meanwhile, some non-Uyghurs may assume the situation has improved, as the re-education camps are no longer in global headlines
At the request of the illegal “Havat Maon” settlers, Israeli forces detained five Palestinian children, aged 8–12, for gathering wild vegetables and flowers near the settlement.

NEW | The Houthis struck Aramco fuel depots near Riyadh International Airport, marking the first Houthi attack on the Saudi capital during the current Houthi-Saudi conflict. The attack is part of the Houthis' campaign to maximize economic and political costs on Saudi Arabia to force the kingdom to acquiesce to Houthi demands.
Social media users published footage of a large plume of smoke near the airport, which experienced major disruptions following the Houthi attack.
The Houthis claimed that they fired a "large number" of missiles and drones targeting "sensitive sites" in Riyadh as well as Aramco facilities in Yanbu, which is home to a major Red Sea oil export terminal. The Houthis have repeatedly struck Yanbu during the conflict to constrain Saudi Arabia's ability to export oil and thereby increase pressure on Saudi to meet Houthi demands.
The Houthis' stated demands are primarily economic and seek to address the dire economic situation in Houthi-controlled territory, but the Houthis maintain a grand strategic objective of controlling at least all of Yemen.
ISW-CTP will continue to monitor the conflict and provide updates as events warrant.

Palestinian farmers are rebuilding Gaza’s seed bank with native crops to resist Israeli-imposed hunger. Seed distribution has been a lifeline for many Palestinians in Gaza throughout the genocide.
I swear to you, what we are living through in Gaza has gone beyond all limits of reason and beyond what the human mind can comprehend.
Tonight, a house near us collapsed. More than 16 people were killed, and more than 100 people are still missing at this moment. Six entire families are trapped under the rubble, and no one knows how many people may still be alive beneath it.
The scene is unbearably painful. Children, women, and elderly people are trapped under the rubble, entire families waiting for someone to rescue them. Their voices may still be buried beneath these ruins, but there is not enough equipment to reach them.
There are no machines capable of clearing the rubble, and no rescue teams equipped to deal with this scale of destruction. Time is passing, while people remain trapped beneath tons of concrete and debris.
These children did nothing. They were simply trying to survive. They fled the tents searching for somewhere that could protect them, only to find themselves buried beneath the ruins of a home.
How can anyone comprehend that a child could be spending their final hours trapped under the rubble, while no one is able to reach them?
Gaza is collapsing before our eyes. Families are being buried, children are being left beneath the rubble, and the world is watching.
Do something. Do not leave these people to die beneath the rubble in silence.
BREAKING: For the first time since the Iran war began, JPMorgan says it no longer has a baseline view on oil, writing "we simply don't know how to model the endgame," and that the assumption that the Middle East disruptions are temporary is "becoming increasingly difficult to sustain," per JPMorgan Global Research.
The bank says it had assumed there were economic red lines the Trump administration would be unwilling to cross, and that six months later "many of those lines have been crossed, yet the exit strategy is less clear, not more."
Chevron's CEO said this week the Great fuel crisis has officially arrived, as Trump officials continue to claim the disruption temporary.
I have never seen such a blatant double standard in my life.
In 2018, when 12 young Thai football players and their coach were trapped in a cave in Thailand, the world did not say, “They are not our citizens.” Britain sent some of its best cave divers. Australia sent doctors and rescue experts. The United States sent more than 40 military personnel and equipment. Countries came together and worked with the Thai authorities to get those children out.
And they did as clear in the video below. They saved all 13 of them.
Tonight, in Gaza, people woke up to the screams and cries of children, women, and elderly people after a six-story building known as the “Al-Saada” building collapsed. Nearly 100 people were sheltering inside. Dozens of tents surrounded the building. Many of those trapped under the rubble are children.
They are still under the rubble. So where are the international rescue teams?
Why aren't neighboring Arab countries sending rescue teams? Why aren't Western countries sending specialized teams to save whoever can still be saved?
My heart aches for my people in Gaza :(
