One thing we can do to make a difference in would be to always be mindful of who can be on the other side of our post or comments. A way to do this is with a trigger warning, or with a even by considering not posting the possibly offensive content in the first place. #lesson12
Safety is a big thing when communicating online. There are many things to be careful & aware of. Communicating with the wrong people can escalate to meeting a pedofile. Not everyone you to talk will turn on you, but we need to make kids more aware of the red flags. 3/3 #lesson12
Respect in online situations is also an important skill that should be taught. When online, everyone needs to be aware of what they are posting, who might read it and how it can hurt people. 2/3 #lesson12
The 3 main things that children should be taught as communication skills are critical thinking, respect and online safety. If we teach them from a young age to analyze and come up with an opinion they will be more effectively communicating as teens and adults. 1/3 #lesson12
@GabrielleEdu307 I agree, but if you look at The Incredibles movies the hero known as Frozone is an example of a person of color that is portrayed as a hero in a Disney film.
@MaxGregoire_ Yes I agree. The profit driven side comes from the advertising and profits from their productions and the family-friendly side is the story told in their productions. If you think about it, these two sides meet in Disney World/Land Parks.
@ionutspataceanu Completely agree with you. And actually if you rewatch those same films as a older teen or adult you'll likely learn and notice something different than when you were a child.
@Xinyao40077701 I agree with you. It almost wouldn't make sense if Disney wasn't profit driven, but I find that this lesson focuses a lot on the negative things rather than the positive. Yes, there are portrayals of racism but Disney is so much more than that.
The Princess and the Frog tells the story of a young black women, Tiana who is shown as an empowering women who does not use her body to get what she wants. This truly shows the progression that Disney has made over time in their productions. 2/2 #lesson11
That being said, I do believe the racial, ethic and gender portrayals have changed over time. We should keep in mind the year that Mickey Mouse Monopoly was made (2001). An example of a film that shows their progression is The Princess & the Frog (2009) 1/2 #lesson11
Maybe it was read too much into but to compare them to people of color means that Disney itself has an impact on what they show in movies. If a child can make this connection, what does mean for older individuals? Disney has a direct impact on its audience. 2/2 #lesson11
Disney does have an impact on the stories it tells. No matter how old you are or how many times you've seen that movie you will learn something they are trying to say. Sometimes what they say exhibits the wrong idea for example with the hyenas in the short film. 1/2 #lesson11
Do you believe that men and women will ever be equal in society? For example, will women in sports such as soccer ever be paid the same as men who play in the same league? #lesson10
Feminist is a very controversial topic among society. The more we talk about it, the more people share their opinions on how they disagree/agree. Feminism is a growing issue in our society. 3/3
Given that women are typically underrepresented in society and social media, when women do speak up social media the value of what is said is important given the ways there opinions have been disregarded and ignored in the past. 1/3 #lesson10
