Today's Lutherans proclaim they are "not against anything, but rather *for* the gospel" (in whatever variant) because they rightly surmise that being against false teaching makes them a threat, and being seen as a threat will mean their lives become harder.

The historical class of men known as the Confessors to a man have reputations as pugilists, because that's exactly what they were. Today's Lutherans have to deny that legacy because the comfort they seek is their own.
