Proud to share what I’ve been working on the last couple years. I conceived, designed, and built a system to evolve libraries of arbitrary genes. It’s called ORACLE, OrthoRep Assisted Continuous Library Evolution. Here’s the why, how, and what.
@anselmlevskaya The funniest “doomsday” take. “Scientists” calling for bans on mirror life research are calling for a ban on spirit summoning research.
I’m going to assume they have another tranche of validation experiments they’re sitting on for release soon, and this is bait. Otherwise, embarrassing.
Claude has discovered a previously unknown enzyme system hidden in the DNA of bacteriophages. Beside the enzyme’s gene sits a long array of repeating DNA—a structure that looks somewhat similar to CRISPR.
We don’t yet understand what this system does, but only a handful of known systems share its features, and all of them are able to cut, copy, and paste DNA. Historically, the discovery of such programmable systems has helped revolutionize medicine. CRISPR, for instance, is now the foundation of genetic medicines. But it will take much more work to learn what this system does, and whether it can be put to similar use.

I’d be in support of these with responsible governance, but society showed itself to be irrational in the face of a new virus. Metagenomic seq would cause more panic than good, and PPE does near nothing w/ respiratory virus. Screening sure; but needs to be effective in not putting up additional barriers to research, and preserving freedom to synthesize your own dna. Strengthening speed and effectiveness of countermeasures seems like the better track.
@MelindaBChu1 How do you know plastic is actually a problem for human health? Wasn’t there a paper that came out recently that says a lot of the measurements of “plastic accumulation” came from experimenter error
@ComradeDoom1 I feel like I haven’t seen much in the way of servicing big tech, just stupid crypto scams. Silicon Valley is a weathervane; but by donations their allegiances are 90% to Democrats. https://t.co/YLSezAahVC
@billionsmustliv Generously its that state actors already have this capacity; I was singing biorisk tune over a decade ago, had someone give a talk on black plague research in a syn bio undergrad course. And re AI x bio; we’ll see! I’ve been impressed a couple times.
At their current accuracy the models open up narrow opportunities, and the progress there has been a ton slower than I expected. Still requires high throughput screening to make anything useful; which was the prior state. It’s just you can generate a starting place more efficiently now. And I use it for protein design! You can do some cute stuff but it’s overstated.
