@ODEONCinemas@0DE0NHelp - your team at Odeon Haymarket in London are an absolute dream. Joe and Maria found a present we’d just lost and saved our evening. Thank you! 🥳
Craziest fun fact of the day:
“In the three years from 2020 to 2022, the [shipping] industry generated as much profit as it had during the previous six decades combined…Maersk’s annual pre-tax income soared from $967mn in 2019 to $30.2bn in 2022”

@KateRaworth - loved the pod with Alastair & Rory ❤️
One Q: you said the economy is addicted to growth. Isn’t it ultimately society which is addicted to growth…& real challenge is whether people & communities can be convinced that they can thrive with less? Economy will follow?
Interesting to read about “quiet life” in such a different context - 17th century French friar describing life in the Wendat nation of north-east America. From “The Dawn of Everything” @davidwengrow
I’ve found translating the theory of degrowth into a living, breathing, human understanding of what that might look like difficult. I think @herdyshepherd1 does exactly that in English Pastoral when describing ‘living quietly’ in 1980s Lake District…
@adam_tooze - you called the IRA, “an order of magnitude smaller than what the Chinese are doing”. Is that true even when adjusting for the realistic amount the US gov will spend ($1.2tr according to Goldman vs $369bn officially) plus the knock-on private investment ($1.8tr)?
@ACJSissons@dan_chandler Totally agree - you can’t avoid the need for proper external regulation.
But it’s an alternative end point to nationalisation. It keeps benefits of privatisation, eg access to private capital, while potentially better aligning corporate gov with regulatory goals
- @OpenCity_UK could bring back the lost river tour they used to do
@Thames21@derelict_london
Great article on the volunteer work going on to actually recover these lost rivers:

Most Londoners, including me, don’t know much about the city’s ‘lost rivers’ despite a huge rise in work to recover and open them up. There’s a lot of potential with 640km of waterways so would could we do? Ideas below but would love to hear more.
- @bluecrowmedia could create another of their beautiful maps to highlight all the accessible rivers in London
- Art projects, eg painting over roads to follow rivers’ paths…could we even persuade some private buildings to take part even if access remains restricted?
