A very good article from @NikkeiAsia on the geopolitical and economic stakes surrounding various Chinese open-source models:

WHITE HOUSE JUST NAMED NUCLEAR ENERGY A NATIONAL SECURITY TECHNOLOGY. NOT CLEAN ENERGY. ITS OWN CATEGORY.
WHAT THE STRATEGY ACTUALLY SAYS
· The new National Security Science and Technology Strategy names nuclear energy as one of twelve key enabling technologies for U.S. battlefield dominance and power projection, listed alongside AI and autonomy, hypersonics, directed energy, and semiconductors.
· Appendix A updates the OSTP critical and emerging technologies list and gives nuclear energy a standalone entry with four subfields: advanced fission reactors, fusion energy, space nuclear power and propulsion systems, and high-temperature and radiation-resistant materials. The 2024 CET list carried no standalone nuclear category.
· Microgrids powered by advanced nuclear reactors are named as an energy resilience opportunity under the strategy's national resilience architecture, which prioritizes modernizing infrastructure critical to national security.
· Agencies are directed to prioritize Appendix A areas, nuclear among them, for early- and mid-stage public-private partnerships, and nuclear energy appears as a cooperation area under bilateral technology prosperity deals with allies.
OE READ: Moving nuclear out of a clean energy bucket and into its own security category changes who has to care about it. These lists feed downstream technology-specific strategies, R&D budget lines, and the scope of export controls and investment screening, so the taxonomy does more work than the four subfields under it. The argument here is power for the mission, made to a different set of appropriators than the decarbonization case ever reached.
Does a national security label move advanced nuclear faster than a climate label ever did?

"La tendance tient en trois étapes. Entraîner des modèles originaux : 7B, Mixtral. Puis livrer des modèles phares sur architectures chinoises : Large 3. Enfin, servir directement des modèles chinois : GLM 5.2."

“China is becoming a factory for factories. No longer just a producer of low-value consumer goods, China is now exporting more of the higher-value intermediate and capital goods that underpin global manufacturing, such as chips, precision machinery and robotic arms.” @hannahmiao_ https://t.co/RaXCp9mPxa
Commentary: Authoritarian regimes may project strength, but their reliance on centralized control and political loyalty ultimately breeds corruption, stifles innovation and weakens long-term resilience. 👉 https://t.co/QUKmIcu0hU

China may consider a sweeping reform of wages and pensions (toward a universal basic income?), as artificial intelligence reshapes the labor market, according to Cai Fang, one of the country's leading labor economists.

The real danger isn't the size of any single toll—it's the precedent. Since the mid-20th century, international commerce has relied on the principle that strategic waterways remain open under relatively predictable rules.
If coastal states increasingly view chokepoints as revenue-generating assets rather than shared international corridors, shipping could face a patchwork of transit charges that functions like a global tariff system.
The result would be structurally higher transportation costs, more persistent inflation, slower global growth, and a more fragmented world trading system. That shift could prove as significant for globalization as the rise of tariffs has been for international goods trade.

3/ Numerous articles in the Asian (and North American) press covering these heat waves highlight France’s (and Europe’s) lack of preparedness for extreme weather and industrial capacity issues.
1/ That is where a large portion of France’s government order for portable air conditioners comes from:
In just 7 days: China’s Midea rushes 20,000 air cons to France amid heatwave

2/ Given the number of exceptional measures MIDEA took to fulfill this order in just a few days (a new dedicated production line, overtime, road and rail freight, etc.), the matter was likely handled with special commercial (and perhaps diplomatic) consideration.
- The 45-64 demographic typically represents peak earners who anchor municipal tax bases and possess decades of institutional knowledge
- A declining middle-aged group could gradually thin the ranks of experienced workers, caregivers and civic leaders
