This reminds me of the story of the “Aluu brothers.” A gruesome jungle justice that ended the lives of 4 University of Portharcourt students on 5th October, 2012.

The incident happened in Aluu, a community in Ikwerre, Rivers State.

There were 4 friends, Ugonna Obuzor, Lloyd Toku, Chiadika Biringa and Tekena Elkanah, who were occasional roommates and students of the university of Portharcourt.

Ugonna had a debtor, Bright, who was owing him an amount of money but refused to pay up despite several pleadings from Ugonna.

On that day, November 5, Ugonna sought the company and help of his friends, Lloyd, Chiadika and Tekena to retrieve the money from Bright. Together, the 4 boys went to Bright’s house for the money. During the conversations, there was a rising tension and Bright, who was not ready to pay up, started raising the alarm, shouting thief! thief!

He accused the 4 boys of entering the neighborhood to steal laptops, phones and other electronics. Immediately, a mob gathered and descended on these 4 boys.

They beat them up with planks, hit them with slabs and dragged them through the streets of Aluu, in the presence of the Nigeria Police.

The mob were too many and no object was spared in beating the 4 friends.

During the beating, Tekena’s sister managed to push through the crowd to see the boys who committed the crime and got shocked to see her brother Tekena, lying on the floor alongside his 3 friends with tires hung across their necks.

The sister cried, begged the police and pushed through the crowd crying and pleading for the boys to be set free because they were innocent but the mob overpowered her and in her presence, the 4 boys were set ablaze.

While the boys were burning, a young man casually asked about the person whose belongings they stole but there was no one.

However, arrests were made and a police sergeant was convicted.
