I was never asked to be accountable. Nowhere in my sentence or my prison time was I told to take responsibility, to say sorry, to understand & heal my traumas or make any amends to those I’ve harmed. You’re not “held accountable” in our justice system, you’re just held.
RIP Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
She has too many contributions to list here.
One that was monumental against mass incarceration was Miller vs. Alabama—prohibiting the sentencing of children to life without the possibility of parole.
That was the beginning of my freedom.
A yes vote on Proposition 25 will replace cash bail with risk assessment for detained suspects awaiting trial. The San Diego Public Defender Association endorses Yes on Prop 25!
With courts opening up, who is sacrificed? Our clients and us. We go to court, while prosecutors appear virtually & judges are in plexiglass. This is so they can lock people in cages to solve problems that we know jail doesn’t fix like poverty, substance abuse & mental illness.
A Sacramento County prosecutor removed a Black juror because he had visited his two siblings when they were incarcerated. We need to pass #AB3070 NOW - to prevent DAs from removing jurors of color. #BlackLivesMatterOnJuries#EndJuryDiscrimination

My know-your-rights advice boils down to 2 paradoxical ideas: 1) never talk to cops beyond “am I free to go” (if yes always leave, if no ask for a lawyer & shut up) & 2) correctly invoking your rights can make cops mad & is not a bulletproof vest so do what you must to stay safe.
We create enough wealth with our labor and consumption to remedy all these ills. But we don’t. Because our policy makers don’t serve us, they serve the rich.
Watch this video! Funding public defenders must be part of the conversation to #EndMassIncarceration. Most PD offices are out funded 2 to 1 by DA offices and this does not include law enforcement budgets i.e local police and Sheriffs. #FundPublicDefense
Be clear: Neither Biden nor Harris were my first choices.
BUT...
I ain’t even going to pretend that there is any confusion between them and Trump/Pence.
NAH.
Nope. Nope. Nope.
Blacks are excluded from jury service by peremptory challenges at a rate 2.5 times higher than any other race. #AB3070 will help fix that. Looking forward to discussing on @UpfrontKPFA tomorrow morning w/ @CatsCommentary & @bedwardstiek#BlackJurorsMatter https://t.co/rez3YFDvhb
A LA County prosecutor removed a Black juror b/c he had been in the juror’s own words “detained for being in the wrong part of town while Black.” The reality of being Black in America & bias by police should not prevent us from participating in justice. Pass #AB3070#BLM
