Geology is a good course. The problem is that most people who choose it...did because they want to work in an oil company.
It's a legit reason and I won't fault them for that.
The problem is that the oil sector isn't what it used to be. Even when it was booming, it couldn't have employed half of the geologists produced by Nigerian universities.
Now that the industry isn't at the level it used to be, most of our universities are still offering the course, producing thousands of geologists whose dream is to end up with Shell, Chevron and the likes..
It is frustrating when they can't get in. Even if there is a major recruitment, none can employ up to 100 geologists in a year.
Infact, I believe that most oil companies and oil servicing companies employ more engineers that geologists. Please correct me if I am wrong.
Some of those jobs come with connections too.
How do we tell these graduates that they have other job opportunities other than oil companies?
The cement industry is one that employes geologists. Within the last five years, three new cement plants or more have been built in the country. Each with its own mines. Geologists and mining engineers work in these mines..
We have quarries and coal mines that are privately owned. Geologists can work there.
They can work as geotechnical engineers in some engineering firms.
They can work as environmental geologists dealing with climate change, site remediation, groundwater hydrology, natural disasters..
They can work in specialised laboratories..
They can even start their own companies that deal with drilling and others.
If you love academics, you can lecture or do research...
If you studied geology and you have no interest in the field, switch careers.
Many geologists are not happy because they can't get their dream jobs in oil firms. Some are not aware they can do other things.
Instead of waiting for an oil company job that may never come, check out other sectors or do other things.
For those of you interested in internships,. There is a national geoscience research laboratory in kaduna. You can gain research skills for further studies abroad there.
The Nigerian geological survey agency (NGSA) is in Abuja.
There is also a Nigerian institute of mining and geosciences in Jos.
If you are an undergraduate studying geology, now is the time to look at the various areas in geology and check the opportunities available for them.
Don't wait till you graduate and start moaning about how shell and mobil are not recruiting geologists bla bla bla.
Una good morning o.

Been listening to Pastor Dolapo but after his ministrations at WOFBEC (glad I made it physically), I actually quickly searched his ministry
I was ready to start being a member of the ministry and have him as my pastor
Heart break when I found he was resident in the US. I don't know how I missed that
Can someone please recommend a Netflix show that's actually addictive, the kind that makes people stay up all night and finish season one in one sitting?
As you’re young like this. It won’t hit yet. Till you’re like 50 and everyone is choosing their family over you especially on holidays like this. Na that time you go understand, everywhere go first blur. In all thy getting, aspire to get a partner, your own person but most importantly, pray to God to give you a good person to do life with, because companionship is a need. Don’t let anyone lie to you

At this point, Amorin has no excuse not to perform. If we can't win games like this with the current squad, I doubt things will change anytime soon.
