At the ongoing 63rd session of the @UN Human Rights Council, where Somalia’s human rights situation is once again under review, I delivered a statement addressing grave attacks on media freedom and calling for draft laws to be brought into line with the international human rights standards #Somalia is obliged to uphold.
I also welcomed the establishment of the National Independent Human Rights Commission and the start of its work, while stressing that it must be adequately resourced to operate independently and effectively.
#Cameroon 🇨🇲 Ambassador to #Ethiopia, H. E. Churchill Ewumbue -Monono, attended a high-level side event on Information Integrity Solutions Dialogue at the #UNGA81 in New York. The event was organized by the @UN Department of Global Communication (#DGC), #UNDP, #UNESCO , and the Government of #Brazil, with participation from the Head of Media and Information Division @_AfricanUnion Commission, Mrs. Esther Tankou, who is also the Communication Adviser to the @AfricanUnionUN and Mr. Omar Faruk, President of the Federation of African Journalists (#FAJ). Without safe and quality journalism, there can be no information integrity, as disinformation finds space to grow and thrive.
Glad to have joined prominent UN and African speakers in New York for a roundtable on Strengthening Information Integrity: Building Resilient Information Environments for Sustainable Development in Africa, on the sidelines of Unstoppable Africa 2026 during the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly.
Journalists are not just targets of the information ecosystem crisis and online attacks. They are part of the solution. Africa is at the forefront of shaping solutions that preserve information integrity, which reflect our own realities.

Addressed the UN High-level Summit on Climate Action and the Just Transition, convened by UN Secretary-General António Guterres at UN Headquarters in New York, in the margins of the UN General Assembly.
Speaking for organised labour, my message was simple: workers and their communities must not pay for a climate crisis they did not create. A just transition must protect jobs, livelihoods and labour rights. It must provide social protection, new skills and safe workplaces. Developing countries also need climate finance through grants, not more debt.
I also spoke about information integrity which is the antidote to climate disinformation. People need truthful and reliable information about the climate crisis and its solutions. Journalists reporting on climate change and environmental protection must be free and safe to do their work. When journalists are silenced, communities are denied the truth and impunity thrives.
H.E. John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana 🇬🇭, received our delegation during our recent visit in Accra.
Our discussion focused on the urgent need to defend media freedom, protect journalists and safeguard information integrity across Africa.
Ghana continues to play a leading role in advancing these priorities and ensuring that journalists can work freely and safely without fear or intimidation.
Our collective voice is strong, determined and ready for action. In Accra, 🇬🇭, we took important decisions to support journalists, strengthen journalism and help build the Africa we want. Forward ever, backward never!
Supported by @ILO & @EU_Commission, the IGAD-recognized assembly convened union leaders to strengthen migrant rights and cross-border worker mobility. ILO Country Director Khumbula Ndaba & regional leaders reaffirmed support for strong social dialogue. #DecentWork#IGAD#ILO
A major gathering of Horn of Africa trade union leaders is underway in Mogadishu.
Hosted by @festusomalia and supported by the @ILO and the EU 🇪🇺, the two-day General Assembly of the Horn of Africa Confederation of Trade Unions (HACTU) brings together national trade union centres from IGAD countries, Somali Ministers and senior representatives of IGAD and the ILO.
For the first time at this level in Mogadishu, organised labour from across the Horn has come together to strengthen regional solidarity and help shape the region’s future on jobs, workers’ rights, labour mobility and regional trade and economic integration.
A strong Horn of Africa needs a strong voice for its working people.
Journalist Bashir Mohamed Abdullahi has today died from the serious injuries he sustained after being shot in Baidoa, Southwest State of #Somalia, on 3 September.
His death must not end with another message of condolence. Who killed Bashir? Why was he killed? Who will be held responsible? We demand answers, justice and accountability. This chronic impunity for attacks on Somali journalists must end!

Congratulations to the delegation of #Togo 🇹🇬 and the Africa Group on the adoption this morning by the #UNGA of resolution A/80/L.104, “Correct the Map.”
First endorsed by the African Union Assembly in February and officially passed at the United Nations today, this @_AfricanUnion initiative marks a historic step toward accurate and equitable global cartographic representation.
For centuries, the Mercator projection distorted global geography, shrinking Africa to the size of Greenland when our continent is actually 14 times larger. Today’s resolution promotes equal-area maps like Equal Earth across classrooms, media, and international institutions ensuring the world map finally reflects Africa’s true scale, weight, and place in the world.
Different continents, but many of the struggles facing organised labour are the same. Here in São Paulo, Brazil 🇧🇷, at the 1st Trade Union Meeting and Political Conference between Latin America, the Caribbean and Africa, we are building a common agenda for common struggles, turning solidarity across continents into collective action.
@FESTUsomalia today actively engaged in the National Consultation on Somalia’s National Child Labour Policy and National Action Plan on the Elimination of Child Labour, organised by @SomaliaMolsa with @ILO support, and was officially opened by Director General Abdullahi Hassan Adan.
Speaking for workers, FESTU brought trade union priorities to the discussion, calling for stronger action to prevent child labour, effective enforcement of policies and laws, more decent jobs for adults and greater protection for children, using genuine social dialogue as the mechanism.
This work is not new for FESTU. In January 2014, with ILO support, we launched a national campaign against child labour which also pushed for Somalia to ratify ILO Convention No. 182 on the Worst Forms of Child Labour. Somalia ratified the Convention on 20 March 2014.
Twelve years later, the focus must now be on turning these commitments into action. Every child deserves protection from child labour and the opportunity to learn, grow and build a better future.
