I had the honour to speak at Martti Ahtisaari Legacy Seminar in Dar es Salaam today.

Africa was very close to Martti Ahtisaari's heart and Tanzania had a special role in his life. Here his career as a mediator began.

In Tanzania, he got friends from the independence movements and understood the principle that he followed throughout his career: only parties of the conflict can make peace. You cannot bring that from the outside.

I visited the National Museum of Tanzania and highlighted the mutual respect and equal partnership of our countries.

The modern history of our countries shows that the independence of countries requires global institutions to enforce and protect the idea of nation states and their equal rights.
