We were attacked by a group of masked Israeli settlers, a 70 year old Palestinian man was hospitalised, and I was repeatedly kicked in the face. Here is how it happened.

We arrived in the Palestinian village Hamamat al-Malih in the Jordan Valley, which was repeatedly targeted by severe settler attacks in the past week. In fact, just the day before, the settlers smashed the cameras, solar panels and windows in the remaining Palestinian houses.

When we arrived in the evening, we found Abu Raed,a 70 year old Palestinian man, injured and barely standing. He told us that two hours before, the settlers stormed the village, found Abu Raed there alone, and attacked him, beating and kicking him while we was laying down.

Less than an hour later, the the settlers came back, masked, armed with rocks, knives and sticks. They smashed the windows of our car and cut all the tires, and then ran after us. We batricaded ourselves inside the house, but the settlers broke through the door and beat me, Abu Raed, and another 70 year old, a solidarity activist, kicking and punching us repeatedly as we were laying on the ground.

I was lucky, because they punched me in the face before kicking me in the face, and knocked off my glasses, otherwise I could have lost my eye. They continued kicking us as we were on the ground, stole my phone to get rid of the footage, and left.

We called other activists, who called the police and an ambulance, and we hid nearby, in case the settlers came back. And the settlers did come back, no longer masked, at around the same time as the police.

But the police said that there is no evidence that it's the same settlers and that we should "go file a complaint". Compare this to the mass arrests of Palestinians, on no evidence except the word of a settler.

An Israeli ambulance arrived and at first refused to treat Abu Raed, saying "he is Arab, what can we do", but eventually agreed to take him away to pass him to a Palestinian ambulance. He is more or less ok, and was discharged this morning.

Attacks like this happen in the West Bank on a daily basis since the start of the Iran war.

Il y a 14 jours, alors qu’Israël et les Etats-Unis venaient de déclencher leur offensives contre l’Iran, je publiais un post écrit et une vidéo pour expliquer en quoi cette intervention était dangereuse et reposait sur une vision biaisée de l’ordre international, un défaut de stratégie et un aventurisme dangereux. Je rappelais les précédents de 2003 et 2011 pour alerter sur le risque d’embrasement régional et mondial, qui allait forcément exposer la France et l’Europe et j’évoquais l’idée que le rôle de la France devrait être de s’inscrire dans la défense du droit international car la loi du plus fort conduit inévitablement au chaos.

Ce faisant, je ne faisais que développer une vision gaullienne de la situation, fondée sur l’indépendance de la France, la défense de ses intérêts et de ceux de ses alliés, et le refus des doubles standards qui, depuis longtemps déjà, marginalisent les pays occidentaux.

Le déferlement d’insultes qu’a suscité ce message a de quoi laisser rêveur alors que, deux semaines plus tard, l’échec stratégique américain est patent, que le conflit s’étend (frappant tragiquement les soldats français) et expose une fois de plus le Liban à des crimes de guerre, et que la crise économique - conséquence évidente d’une guerre autour du principal goulot d’étranglement de l’économie mondiale, le détroit d’Ormuz - va frapper en premier lieu les classes populaires du monde entier.

Ces centaines de messages d’insulte et de haine illustrent un point : le rôle de la propagande et le poids des intimidations par l’usage croisé de faux comptes et de réels relais d’influence. L’héroïque jeunesse iranienne qui a affronté les balles d’un régime assassin n’a nullement besoin d’être instrumentalisée par les éternels idéologues du devoir d’ingérence qui ont provoqué un cauchemar en Irak et en Syrie au nom d’intérêts qui n’avaient rien à voir avec la morale qu’ils affichaient.

Notre boussole, dans une époque de montée des périls, doit être la défense des intérêts des Français et la continuité de la voix de la France en faveur d’un ordre international fondé sur le droit. Voeu pieu ? Non, si nous nous donnons les moyens d’être audibles et d’assurer la résilience de notre économie. Une politique en faveur de la production sur le sol français est la seule arme pour affronter les chocs économiques et notre capacité à résister aux pressions des puissances qui voudraient faire taire la voix de la France. C’est parce que nous produirons une énergie décarbonnée bon marché, parce que nous aurons une industrie sidérurgique et chimique indispensable à la perpétuation de notre industrie de défense, parce que nous développerons des outils numériques indépendants, que nous pourrons rétablir notre équilibre budgétaire, retrouver une marge de manoeuvre face aux crises et nous opposer avec un minimum d’efficacité à l’aventurisme américain comme à l’impérialisme des autres puissances prédatrices.

Un point, enfin : la voix de la France, seule puissance d’Europe qui ait, par ses outre-mers et par sa force de dissuasion nucléaire, une vocation mondiale, étendant ses intérêts vitaux au delà du continent, doit se perpétuer pour le bien même de nos alliés européens. Dans l’état actuel de l’Europe, alors que plusieurs de nos alliés entendent perpétuer leur dépendance aux Etats-Unis, rien ne serait pire que de placer la France sous l’éteignoir d’une politique étrangère européenne dont Ursula Von der Leyen nous a donné l’orientation l’été dernier face à Donald Trump. Ne trahissons pas, par pur dogmatisme ou pour jouer les bons élèves d’un européisme de façade, des principes dont nous sommes encore, aux yeux de bien des peuples, les porte-parole.

It’s going unnoticed because so much other news is happening, but the war drums are beating again in D.C. The warmongers worry this is their last chance to get the white whale they’ve been chasing for thirty years, an all-out regime change war against Iran.

A new Middle East war would be a catastrophic mistake. Our military stockpiles are depleted from three years of backing Ukraine. Our effort to reshore manufacturing has only just begun and will take years to bear fruit. War would worsen our already immense deficit and national debt. Iran is larger than Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan combined. A war would not be easy and could easily become a calamity.

Thanks to President Trump’s restraint during his first term, America has a golden opportunity to pull away from Middle East quagmires for good. We shouldn’t throw that opportunity away so that sone D.C. has-beens can feel tough by sending young Americans to die yet again.
