I’ve been to different parts of Italy but, funnily enough, never to “the eternal city.” So, I decided that it was a good destination to go and baby boy for a few days and visit the residence of il Papa.

I’ve been to various countries with rich historical legacies, but visiting a city that has been continuously inhabited for some 2,700 years was quite something.

The best thing about Rome, for me, is how the old has been seamlessly integrated with the new. You could be on a bog-standard street and the tour guide will just say “Beneath our feet is where Julius Caesar was stabbed 44 years BEFORE Christ.” And then you drive past the Colosseum to get to a restaurant and they casually tell you that it has stood there for nearly 2,000 years!

Our driver whinged about how much it cost to build the Supreme Court. He said he is sure that the Mafia has inflated the price by some 500%.

I told him that I didn’t realise that the Mafia were still active. He looked at me as if to say “Are you daft?” He then said “The Mafia controls EVERYTHING!”

He complained about how dirty Rome is and asked whether where I had come from was as dirty as Rome. I said it’s cleaner than Abuja but not as clean as London. He pointed to some men and women sweeping the streets and said “The Mafia make more money from street cleaning than they make from drugs, gambling and prostitution.” I felt like I was in a Mario Puzo novel about the 1920s.

Then I started to rationalise that serious corruption in Nigeria is actually like a Mafia set-up. I remembered what one senior Nigerian politician once said to me: “Don’t be confused by the alignments and realignments, the political family in Nigeria is one family.”

Anyway, on to the Vatican to go and baby boy with the Pope. I asked after him but they said traveled. I told them to let him know that Ezemmuo came.😂

Entering the Vatican, the Italians make great play of letting you know that you have left Italy and are now in a different country, with a different Head of State, its own army (the Swiss Guards), and its own Euro coins. No need to spoil the fun by asking why we didn’t need a Vatican visa or how many wars the 135-man Vatican army can fight.😂

The Vatican Museum was quite something. Artefacts from Egypt, Greece and different parts of Italy before Italy was unified. Then, as we were about to enter the Sistine Chapel, they reminded us that it is a church. Men take off hats and caps. Women can keep them on but don’t have to cover their hair. No pictures or videos allowed. No taking! Shuuush! 🤫

Then, I was fortunate in this my lifetime to behold the genius of Michelangelo of Florence. It took him four years to paint the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel and another 5 years to paint “The Last Judgment” on the wall behind the altar of the chapel. He used the opportunity to sub all of his critics by depicting them as devils or other unsavoury characters. 😀

The Sistine Chapel brought a tear to my eyes sha. I wondered how God could give some people so much talent, and how they were able to use it in the praise and worship of His name.

The work took a physical toll
on Michelangelo. He is alleged to have said that he would prefer death to having to do it again.

Then, on to St Peter’s Basilica. It just makes you feel so small. You realise that some things are just bigger than you. You realise how tiny the Pope’s living quarters are, compared to the whole square. You are informed that you are one of 60,000 people who visit EVERYDAY!

You realise that, just like you, the Pope will die and be replaced by another. But also that the Holy Catholic Church, the bones of St Peter (the rock upon which God’s church was built) resting under the Vatican, and the Gospel of Christ will remain forever.

Apt analysis. While El-Rufai did some good things in Kaduna which I admire, I think the man thought too high of himself. Politics shows that deceit and conceit are not catalyst for sustainability in leadership.

El-Rufai is arguably the most politically destroyed figure heading into 2027.

And the most remarkable part is how completely Tinubu did it without ever appearing to lift a finger.

El-Rufai was a founding architect of the APC. He helped build the coalition that brought the party to power in 2015. He was one of the most influential power brokers in the north for a decade.

He has now been forced to dump the APC entirely, joining the Social Democratic Party as part of a plan to build an opposition coalition against the man whose presidency he helped engineer. 

He went from party builder to party refugee. In the same party within two years.

This is a political eviction then Tinubu went after his new party.

The SDP itself is enmeshed in a factional crisis, with one faction fully in support of Tinubu. 

El-Rufai left APC to escape Tinubu and landed in a party Tinubu had already partially infiltrated before he arrived. The man cannot find a building that does not have Tinubu’s fingerprints on the doorknob.

Then came Ribadu.

El-Rufai publicly declared that Nuhu Ribadu, his former friend and now National Security Adviser, was deliberately trying to destroy his reputation and eliminate northern figures from the 2027 political radar to clear the path for his own 2031 presidential ambition. 

Whether that accusation is accurate or paranoia, the outcome is the same. El-Rufai is now publicly feuding with the man who controls Nigeria’s national security architecture. That is not a fight any opposition politician can win from outside government.

Then came the legal siege.

The ADC has described El-Rufai as a political prisoner of Tinubu, stating that the legal actions against him are politically motivated and specifically designed to keep him out of circulation ahead of 2027. They noted that none of the charges against him are non-bailable, yet he has been held. 

A former governor, former minister, and major opposition figure is being described by his own party as a political prisoner not by a fringe group….by his party’s national publicity secretary on national television.

The courts that should protect him are the same courts operating inside the same system Tinubu controls.

Then Tinubu went to Kaduna.

The state El-Rufai governed for eight years. The state El-Rufai built his entire northern political identity around.

Tinubu’s Kaduna visit drew thousands, cutting across traditional party divides, and served as a direct political signal that the north was not slipping away from him despite El-Rufai’s opposition narrative. 

El-Rufai watched from detention while Tinubu was celebrated in his own backyard.

There is no crueller political statement than that.

Now let’s look at the full picture.

Removed from his party, His new party compromised, His closest ally turned adversary, Legal cases keeping him physically constrained, His home state politically reclaimed. Even within the ADC coalition, allies privately admit their immediate challenge is organisational survival, not defeating Tinubu. 

El-Rufai entered 2023 as a kingmaker.

He is entering 2027 as a cautionary tale.

This is the lesson Nigerian politicians keep refusing to learn.

El-Rufai helped build the machine.

The machine has now eaten him.

Yesterday, Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria posted on Twitter that Nigerians can now export cow bones duty-free to China.

Under the comment sections, some Nigerians were asking the ambassador to tell them what they are using the cow bones for😁

Some were telling the ambassador to tell his people to come and setup the processing facility here in Nigeria, so they can create jobs.

Funny people. I laughed at our inability to do simple Google search.

As a livestock farmer and Agro commodities trader, I already know the uses of cow bones.

And about building a factory here in Nigeria? Nigerians are the ones to do it, but sadly everyone is building hotels😁

Let me tell you a few uses of cow bones.

Here are 4 major uses of cow bones you can mention in your content;

✍🏻Bone meal fertilizer: Cow bones are processed into bone meal, rich in phosphorus and calcium, used to improve soil fertility.

They prefer this to fertilize their soil not the chemical sold to our rural farmers.

✍🏻Animal feed supplement: Processed bone meal can be used as a mineral supplement in livestock feed, especially for calcium and phosphorus.

Before going to the benefits, I found it amazing that clove is called kànáfùrù in Yorùbá, Kananfari in Hausa and Kanafura in Dangbali (Ghana). How did we all agree with to call it similar names? Anyways, let's move on.

One of the best ways to use cloves is to grind it and add to your spices. They'll actually add special taste to your meals. You can also sprinkle the powder in tea or pap. You can cook the whole cloves and drink its tea. You can also just swallow the powder with water. Let's now look at the health benefits

1. ULCER
Some days ago, I wrote about how our stomach produce acid for digestion and how mucus layer protects that stomach lining from ulcer. Now, most ulcer are cause by thinning of this mucus layer. Some studies have shown that eating cloves in large amounts can thicken this mucus, which will in turn lower your your risk of getting ulcers help in healing ulcer if you already have.

2. DIABETES
If you're diabetic, eugenol in cloves can help lower your blood glucose to safe levels. In the same vein, you should be careful of taking too much so that the blood sugar will not be reduced too much. Hypoglycemia, which is when blood sugar is tii low, is as dangerous. So, you want to be moderate.

3. TOOTH ACHE
I learnt this while staying in the North before reading about its medical proof. If you have tooth ache, crush cloves and grind it to paste. Apply to the tooth. You should feel relieved in minutes. Eugenol in clove is a natural anesthetic (numbing agent) and it's the one responsible here. You may get clove oil for faster results.

They're also rich in antioxidants and so, they'll help mop up free radicals and and help prevent/reduce inflammation. Some studies also claim that they can help liver function when consumed moderately.

Finally, these are just some of the few health benefits of cloves and they're cheap compared to many drugs. APPLY MODERATION in its use and share this for others who may need it.

The Fed Govt has disclosed that Nigeria produces ~1.4 million metric tonnes of palm oil annually, while domestic demand exceeds 2.5 million metric tonnes.

The shortfall of more than one million metric tonnes annually has led to the expenditure of between $500 million and $600 million on imports. Malaysia exports over $500million dollars worth of palm oil to Nigeria.

REFOCUSING THE NATIONAL OPEN UNIVERSITY OF NIGERIA: LEGAL INTENT VS PRACTICAL REALITY

Nigeria must have an honest and evidence-based conversation about the purpose of its Open University system, particularly the National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN), and whether it is currently aligned with its founding vision.

LEGAL FRAMEWORK AND ESTABLISHMENT INTENT
The National Open University of Nigeria was established by the National Open University Act No. 6 of 1983 (later reaffirmed and amended). A careful reading of the Act shows that it does not explicitly restrict admission to “mature students” or working adults.

Instead, the law adopts a broader philosophical approach. It mandates the university to:
- Provide flexible and accessible education
- Promote lifelong learning
- Remove barriers to higher education
- Expand opportunities beyond the conventional university system

This means that legally, NOUN is designed as an open-access institution with no strict age limitation or requirement for prior work experience. However, while the law is broad, the structural design and global context of Open Universities provide deeper insight into the intended target audience.

GLOBAL CONTEXT AND FUNCTIONAL DESIGN
Across the world, Open Universities were established primarily to serve:
- Working professionals seeking formal qualifications
- Adults who missed traditional university education earlier in life
- Individuals requiring flexible learning due to work, family, or location constraints

Institutions such as the UK Open University, India’s Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU), and the University of South Africa (UNISA) all reflect this model. Their student populations are predominantly mature, employed, or otherwise unable to participate in full-time conventional education.

Thus, while not legally restricted, Open Universities are functionally designed for experience-rich learners rather than experience-seeking teenagers.

CURRENT REALITY IN NIGERIA

In practice, NOUN continues to fulfil its legal mandate to expand access to education. It continues to provide flexible, distance-based learning and has successfully widened participation in higher education.

However, there is a noticeable shift in its student demographic. An increasing number of young people (many of them fresh secondary school graduates with no work experience) are enrolling in NOUN. This trend is largely driven by:
- The absence of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) requirement
- Perceived ease of entry compared to conventional universities
- The desire to bypass the competitive and restrictive traditional admission system

This development represents not a legal violation, but a strategic drift.

THE CORE ISSUE: MISALIGNMENT, NOT ILLEGALITY

NOUN has not breached its establishment law. It remains compliant with its mandate to provide open and flexible education.

However, there is a growing misalignment between:
- The legal principle of open access
- The original functional purpose of serving non-traditional learners

When a system designed for flexibility becomes widely used as an alternative shortcut for conventional university entry, its identity begins to blur.

POLICY IMPLICATIONS

If this trend continues unchecked:
- The original beneficiaries, working adults and lifelong learners, may be crowded out
- The distinct value proposition of Open and Distance Learning (ODL) may be weakened
- The system risks evolving into a parallel, lower-barrier entry route rather than a specialised educational model

CONCLUSION
The National Open University of Nigeria has not violated the law. But it may be gradually drifting from its foundational logic. The challenge before policymakers is not to restrict access arbitrarily, but to restore alignment between purpose and practice. If it focuses on its targets based on global best practices, more than 95% of NOUN's graduates (after 4 years of study) should be over 30 years of age, thus voiding the need to do NYSC.

Open Universities are one of the most powerful tools for inclusive national development, but only when they serve the audience they were structurally designed to support. Nigeria must decide whether NOUN will remain a platform for lifelong learning or become an unintended detour around the discipline and structure of conventional higher education.

We had presentations in school today, and Nigeria featured in four students' works. The first student analyzed Nigeria's oil economy with Norway's. The second discussed Nigeria's smallholding farmers and Ghana's.

Another focused on Nigeria's electricity access and Kenya’s. Another presented on Nigeria's educational spending and out-of-school children, comparing them with South Africa and Kenya’s, based on SDGs 4.1.

One common thread was that Nigeria can't be ignored; everyone is interested in Nigeria. Nigeria was a bad case example in all. And each time Nigeria is mentioned, everyone will shout Victorrrrrr.
