Indian philosophy has an ancient technical manual for this exact problem.

According to Samkhya (1 of the oldest schools of Indian thought), the mind (Manas), the intellect (Buddhi), & the ego (Ahankara) are all part of Prakriti (Materiality).

If we simulate every neuron, we have successfully copied the Prakriti. In Samkhya, this Digital Copy would be just as material as a physical brain.

However, Samkhya argues that there is a separate principle called Purusha (Pure Consciousness/The Observer). The copy would have a mind, memories, & a personality, but it would be Jada (inert/unconscious) unless it was illuminated by the Purusha.

To an ancient Indian sage, the simulation is a perfect zombie: it looks, talks, & thinks like us, but there is nobody home.
