These jingles are intended to be broadcasted on two major radio stations twice daily in Sokoto state.

Beyond the Merriment: From Celebration to Consciousness

At Iri Ji Manchester, 5th September 2026 (actually my first time), I was deeply moved by the warmth, beauty and unmistakable joy of our people. The laughter, music, food, fashion, culture and celebration reminded me once again that we are a profoundly convivial people. We know how to gather. We know how to honour tradition. We know how to display achievement and enjoy the fruits of hard work.
But beyond the colour, affluence, expensive cars, jewellery and merriment, one troubling question stayed with me: how conscious are we of who we are?

Not merely culturally or economically. Not merely as successful professionals in Britain, Europe, America, Canada or elsewhere. But as a people with a history, a homeland, a collective vulnerability and an unfinished struggle.
There is nothing wrong with prosperity. There is nothing wrong with beauty, celebration or cultural pride. But wealth without consciousness can become distraction. Celebration without consciousness can become escapism. Culture without consciousness can become costume, food, dance and ceremony emptied of historical meaning.
Many of us have built extraordinary lives abroad. We own homes, run businesses, raise children, contribute taxes and serve in every sector of society. We should be proud of that. But material comfort must never make us politically asleep. For minorities and migrant communities, collective consciousness is not decoration; it is protection.
This truth became clearer when I spoke about the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and the wider question of Biafra. I encountered belief, anger and concern, but also fear.
Some believe in self-determination privately yet are afraid to say so publicly. They fear being identified, travelling home, being arrested or associated with the struggle.
That contradiction must be faced honestly: how can a people demand what they are afraid to name? How can the world understand our grievances if we whisper them among ourselves? Silence has never been a substitute for self-determination.
Justice rarely arrives because oppressors suddenly become compassionate.
Rights are secured when people organise, speak, document, petition, educate, advocate, vote, challenge institutions, use courts, engage governments, build alliances and refuse to disappear into silence.
This does not mean recklessness. It does not mean hatred or violence.
Courage and wisdom must work together. Our struggle must remain peaceful, lawful, strategic, disciplined and intellectually serious.

Not everyone must stand on a stage or attend a protest. But everyone can contribute something.
One can write. Another can research. Another can lobby parliamentarians, support legal advocacy, fund humanitarian work, document history, educate the young, organise communities, engage journalists or assist families affected by detention, displacement and political violence.
A movement becomes powerful when people stop asking, “Who will do it?” and begin asking, “What part can I responsibly do?”

What Must Change:

Our diaspora communities must evolve. Cultural gatherings should remain joyful, but they must also become spaces of consciousness: history, civic education, voter mobilisation, youth engagement, human-rights education, political discussion, community organising and support for political prisoners and affected families.
Our children must know that Igbo identity is more than wearing isi agu once or thrice a year.
They must understand the history behind the culture they celebrate. Our gatherings should not only demonstrate that we have prospered.
They should also demonstrate that we have remembered.

The Path Forward:

We must move from emotional support to organised civic action.
Build consciousness before mobilisation. Create structured diaspora forums in Manchester, London, Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow and beyond. Normalise peaceful political discussion without hatred.
