Brand content is not just brand content.
I was working with a potential client recently. We scored their creator mentions to check brand health — are the people talking about this brand actually saying the right things?
Turns out a good number of them were. Great content. Clear messaging. Real distribution potential.
But here's where it went wrong.
I've seen this play out a few times now.
A brand scores their creator content and finds that the best performing creators aren't always the loudest community members.
The people writing quality content and driving real distribution are often quieter. Meanwhile the most visible members — always in Discord, always in the replies — aren't producing content that actually moves the needle.
The brand capitulated. Rewarded loyalty over quality.
I get it. Loyalty is important, nobody wants community drama. But brands need to separate these two things.
Community members and creators serve different roles.
Community members drive engagement. Creators drive distribution. When you blur the line, you end up paying for neither.
If you're running a content campaign, reward the creators who tell your story right. That's where real users come from.
Want to keep your active community happy? Great. Do something else for them.
But don't sacrifice your distribution to avoid a complaint from someone whose content wasn't moving the needle anyway.
