Ivermectin was first invented in the 1970s by microbiologist Satoshi Ōmura of Japan’s Kitasato Institute and parasitologist William C. Campbell of Merck & Co. Initially, Ivermectin was tested and used for veterinary use in 1981 in order to prevent and treat heartworm/parasitic diseases in livestock. After much deliberation, it was used for humans in 1987 to combat debilitating diseases like river blindness and lymphatic filariasis caused by flies that laid eggs in stagnent water that was drank by individuals living on remote villages in Africa. Eventually, the pharmaceutical industry blocked it because they were losing money by saving lives.
