#ONGC has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with @Vedanta_Group on 22 July 2025, that will pave the way for early monetisation of Jantapathar Gas Field of Upper Assam Shelf South Block, A&AA Basin.

The MoU will enable ONGC & #Vedanta to jointly decide on gas evacuation from the discovery well JP-1Z that couldn’t be put on production earlier, due to non-availability of surface facilities as well as gas sales market in the area.

Under the MoU, joint decision on techno-commercial aspects like split of reserves of the common reservoir, cost and revenue sharing model etc. would also be taken through mutually agreed terms & conditions for holistic development of the field.

The MoU was signed in the presence of @CairnOilandGas Chief Production Officer Mandeep Narang, #Cairn Chief Policy and Regulatory Officer Rakesh Agiwal, #ONGC Director (S&CA) @arunangshuONGC and #ONGC Director (Exploration) @opsinhaONGC asserting a remarkable of collaborative development between PSU and Private energy players.

In a candid and insightful discussion at the #UrjaVarta2025 Fireside Chat, the @Secretary_MoPNG @PetroleumMin Shri Pankaj Jain emphasized on the shift in the Government of India's focus from revenue maximization to enhancing production as the central pillar of the nation's energy strategy.
“All current indicators point towards a critical realization; production must take precedence over revenue maximisation. When production is prioritised, other aspects align naturally.”
Reaffirming the undisputed sovereign rights over natural resources, the Secretary underlined the importance of creating pragmatic incentive structures that encourage production, especially in light of calculations indicating a minimal government take of only 1.5–2% in certain scenarios.
“This presents a valuable lesson: over time, revenue becomes less significant. It is production that will increasingly define the success of our sector.”
