As a kiwi who returned home recently I can identify with the feelings expressed in this article. Perhaps it’s time time for, ‘Team of Six Million’ kōrero and to have some compassion for those trying to get home?https://t.co/EnCbyTl8MJ
@VisibleLearning Even more important might be learning experiences worthy of engagement? I can well see this information being misused , ‘ you child just needs to show more grit.’ Isn’t anything below .4 of questionable value?
@VisibleLearning It was all reading well until the words “Good learner…” were used. There are so many more effective ways to describe successful learners without using such behavioural language.
@smithsmm In 2021 I believe we may have realized there are many more effective and empowering strategies to enhance transition. If testing is the answer perhaps the question is not really about transition?
@dwenmoth This is my second reading of the day that highlights the blindingly obvious and yet so oft ignored, we should be focused on the learner and learning and trying to enhance one and empower the other. Thanks Derek.
@dwenmoth@michaelbhorn Is the job of schools to ‘produce students to...’ or ‘empower and enable’? The 5 strategies suggested in this article are debatable. I suspect many schools & educators would look at them & say ‘doing that’ and yet be nowhere near the ideal. And SMART goals really aren’t smart!
To comply with class-size limits, Scottish primary schools can create mixed-age classes creating a natural experiment showing that mixed age classes are beneficial, though, this might be caused by more effective teachers being assigned to the mixed groups:

@NZedAUS Being a life time Labour voter I am keen to see our current leader’s legacy being connected to reduction in violence in society, reduction in suicide, reduction in child poverty, increase in affordable housing, ... & yes I acknowledge her exceptional leadership in crisis
