‘But Ukraine is corrupt.’ The sentence that ends a thousand arguments — and starts none honestly.

Yes, Ukraine has corruption. Here is what else it has: journalists who expose it and live. Ministers who fall for it. Citizens who filled streets over an anti-corruption law — during the war — until their president reversed himself. Institutions that prosecute upward, imperfectly, but really.

Now Russia. Corruption there is not a flaw in the system. It is the system — a vertical of theft from traffic cop to throne. And not one Russian journalist may document it and remain free.

Visible corruption is a disease being fought. Invisible corruption is a government.

But notice the tell in who deploys this argument. They never demand better oversight of aid. They demand abandonment. The corruption critique is a costume — surrender, dressed for respectable company.

Nobody proposes leaving a burning house unextinguished because the fire brigade has expense-account issues.

Unless, of course, they wanted the fire.

SIKORSKI: Germany, under Merkel and before, believed in transformation through trade.

Like, "If we become big enough customer for Russian gas, they won't risk that relationship for some silly ideas."

Or, "They can't be serious about rebuilding empire. It's too passé, right?" So, they got that wrong.

We were saying, "No, don't let him build pipelines that bypass Central Europe because that's a recipe for war."

So, we got vindicated, unfortunately, about Putin's intentions. His capabilities are less than we thought, but his intentions are even worse than we thought.

Correct. The West bent over backwards to turn a new leaf and pretended Russia is on a path to democracy and peace even while all the signs pointed toward revanchism. Russia has been at war of its own choosing in almost every year since the Soviet Union fell apart. They wouldn’t make their lives better and they made sure their neighbors suffered as well. But because it was “far away,” the West turned a blind eye. And now its pundits are peddling nonsense theories about how NATO made them do it or how we just didn’t try hard enough. Bullshit. We tried. Really hard. Harder than we should have. And it just emboldened the Russians who brought us the largest war in Europe since WW2.

Let us condemn the terrorist attack in Germany, loudly and without apology.

Yesterday, a van rammed into the crowd at Berlin Pride, killing one person and injuring at least sixteen others in what authorities are investigating as an Islamist terrorist attack.

Berlin has always been a beacon of freedom. A city that rose from the scars of division to become a symbol of democracy, human dignity, and the right to live freely. That is why violence targeting a Pride celebration here is so deeply painful. My thoughts are with everyone who was injured or traumatized, simply for celebrating who they are.

I have warned European leaders, at the Munich Security Conference, at the United Nations, in every room that would listen, that appeasing Islamist ideology and silencing those who speak the truth about it would have consequences. That day has come. Again.

Do not silence criticism of Islamism by calling it Islamophobia. That silencing is itself a weapon used against freedom.

Berlin must remain what it has always represented, a city where everyone, regardless of religion, gender, sexual orientation, or background, can live safely, speak freely, and love without fear.

Freedom is never guaranteed. It survives only when we have the courage to defend it.

Exactly right. Instead of "humiliation," the West rolled over when Russia began occupying a chunk of another European country (Moldova), did nothing while Moscow obliterated Chechnya, and immediately accepted the idea that places like Ukraine and Kazakhstan were Russian vassals.

Trump is niet pro-Oekraine. MAGA is niet pro-Oekraine.

I’ve said it before to Ukrainians irl, and I know it sounds harsh, but this is the terrible reality: only the Ukrainian army can defeat russia, and only the Ukrainian people can restore and rebuild their nation.

With very few exceptions - and those are usually the quiet ones doing the work without fanfare - most of your allies are looking after their own interests. Many will try to exploit you, even as they claim to support you. Many already have.

Even some of those cheering for your cause from the sidelines treat your existential war as though it were a football game.

My advice: take whatever aid you can get, but do not trust them.

I am profoundly, deeply sorry that this is happening to you....yet again. I wish that at least one generation of Ukrainians could live without enduring a devastating war, occupation, or genocide.

I am so sorry. Truly am. I wish the price of liberty were not so damn high, and so soaked in blood. God knows that if anyone on this Earth deserves liberty, peace, and prosperity, it is you guys.

May a 1000 generations of Ukrainians never see war again.

‘Just stop sending weapons, and the war will end.’

Correct. It will. Let me describe the ending, since its advocates never do.

We know exactly what Russian occupation looks like, because Ukraine has liberated towns and counted. Bucha lived under Russian rule for thirty-three days: 458 bodies. Torture basements in district after district, standardized like franchises. Twenty thousand children deported for ‘reeducation.’ Mayors executed. Teachers filtered. Mass graves with bound wrists.

Now extend thirty-three days to forever, and one town to a nation of forty million.

That is the ‘peace’ this arithmetic purchases.

If Russia stops fighting, the war ends. If Ukraine stops fighting, Ukraine ends — not as a flag on a map, but family by family, basement by basement, off camera, for years.

Weapons are not prolonging this war. They are the only thing standing between an entire nation and Bucha at scale.

Pacifism that disarms the victim has a proper name: complicity with better manners.

One of the cruel things about living through a war is not just losing people. It is also losing places.

They disappear as you walk out of the store where you bought your body wash. The gas station you stop at. The café you like. The route you know by heart. Every day, geography gets erased just like people you loved.

The Sovietisation of Eastern Europe was a brutal process. It did not merely impose a political system - it shaped institutions, incentives, and the mentality of entire generations.

Much of that system survived 1991. Countries that failed to carry out deep, lasting reforms - to dismantle those structures and produce a genuinely new political elite - ultimately failed to build functioning states. Bulgaria is one example.

Ukraine’s survival is predicated on precisely such reforms. Those who understand the region will understand why.

Given how much the West has contributed to the devastation of Eastern Europe over the past century - often through an arrogant refusal to understand it - I would not place much weight on the “takes” of people who live thousands of kilometres away and have never experienced that system for a single day: neither under the Soviet Union nor in its aftermath.

Ukraine was among the most deeply Sovietised nations. For it, reform is not a matter of optics or pleasing Western observers, but one of survival.

Discard any other takes on the matter.

The West was not quite accepting this, and only realized it was for real after invasion of Ukraine.

We've had arsons, interference in politics, disinformation, espionage, kinetic attacks.

Russians tried to blow up a moving train. We also have incursions by cruise missiles and drones.

We were spending 2% of GDP on defense for the last 20 years, but we've augmented it. We're also developing own defense industry.

The challenge now is to draw the lessons of Ukraine-Russia war and implement them in our procurement, art of war, and training.

‼️ Here is why this is such utter bullshit that it almost makes you throw up from the sheer Republican hypocrisy.

The polling tells the exact opposite story.

When Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, support was broadly bipartisan. Democrats overwhelmingly backed Ukraine, and most Republicans did too. The divide that exists today simply did not exist then.

What happened next? A collapse in Republican support.

According to Gallup, Democratic support for Ukraine has remained remarkably stable throughout the war. Roughly 80 to 86% of Democrats have consistently supported military aid and helping Ukraine reclaim its territory. Gallup explicitly noted that Democrats’ views have changed very little since the war began.

Republicans, meanwhile, moved in the opposite direction.

As Trump made opposition to Ukraine aid part of his political brand, Republican support steadily declined. House Republicans repeatedly blocked or delayed aid packages, MAGA influencers spent years amplifying Kremlin talking points, and the Republican base increasingly shifted toward the view that the US should stop supporting Ukraine or push Kyiv into accepting territorial concessions.

Fast forward to 2026.

Pew found that 50% of Democrats believe America is not doing enough to help Ukraine. Among Republicans, that number is just 11%.

YouGov found that 78% of Democrats sympathise more with Ukraine, compared with just 52% of Republicans. Among MAGA Republicans, it drops even further.

So the claim that “liberals stopped using Ukraine as a cudgel” and then “we discovered who really supports Ukraine” is not supported by a single long-term polling trend.

If anything, the opposite happened.

Democratic voters never abandoned Ukraine.

Republican voters did.

Now that Trump’s handling of Ukraine has become politically damaging and Republicans are heading into difficult midterm elections, some of the very same voices that spent years attacking aid suddenly want to sound pro-Ukraine again.

It’s evidence that many Republicans changed their position while Democrats largely didn’t.

The polling record couldn’t be much clearer.

‘It’s a US proxy war.’ Delivered knowingly, over coffee, by people who never asked a single Ukrainian anything.

I have heard this song before. In 2008, as my country bled, Moscow explained that Georgians had not chosen anything either — Washington had simply wound us up like toys.

Notice what ‘proxy war’ actually does. It performs the empire’s core operation — erasing the subjecthood of smaller nations — using Western mouths, free of charge.

Forty million people voted with the most expensive currency there is. A million volunteered before serious Western weapons arrived. Grandmothers handed sunflower seeds to occupiers in week one — when the ‘proxies’ were expected to fold in three days, and the West’s offer was evacuation, not armament.

Kyiv did not fight because Washington wished it. Washington armed Ukraine because Ukraine refused to die. The causality runs through Ukrainian spines.

Call it what the evidence shows: a war of national survival, with reluctant sponsors.

‘Proxy’ is not analysis. It is colonialism with a graduate degree.

Її мама, Наталія Власова, вже 7 років у російському полоні. Бойовики "ДНР" захопили її ще в 2019-му, звинувативши у шпигунстві. Далі - тортури, сфабрикований суд і 18 років в'язниці.

Наталія - одна з двох тисяч українських жінок, яких незаконно утримує Росія. Майже кожна з них пережили сексуальне насильство та тортури.

Її доньці на момент розлуки було 4 роки. За 7 років полону вони говорили по телефону лічені рази.

Одного разу колишня в'язниця передала Юлі мамину кофту. Дівчинка носила її та нюхала - це був єдиний спосіб для неї відчути маму поруч. А потім дзвінки припинилися.

У "Ізоляції" Наталію роздягали, зв'язували скотчем, обливали водою та били струмом. Вона казала: "Розплющую очі - а в мене обличчя у запеченій крові".

Її закривали в "кам'яному мішку" - крихітному приміщенні без можливості сісти, де від холоду німіли ноги. Їй вибили зуби та виривали волосся.

Але вона не плакала й трималася. Наталія - психологиня, у камері малювала, займалася йогою й підтримувала інших.

Умови були нелюдськими: 10 квадратних метрів на 14 осіб, бетонна підлога, металеві нари та відсутність вентиляції.

Вода - раз на три дні, баня - раз на два тижні. У камері кишіли клопи й таргани. Годували водою з гнилою капустою. Медичної допомоги не було - максимум аспірин.

Людмила Гусейнова, яка сама пережила три роки полону й заснувала ініціативу "Нумо, сестри!", б'є на сполох: жінок вивозять углиб Росії та переміщують між колоніями.

Зв'язок із Наталією майже втрачено. Під час суду в Ростові вона свідчила про тортури й насильство, казала, що просила застрелити її, але їй відмовили. Імовірно, саме за ці свідчення їй винесли 18 років.

Організація Гусейнової опікується Юлею, але не може замінити маму. Дівчинка чекає щодня. І коли їй запропонували подарунок до свята, вона відповіла: "Я хочу маму".

Гусейнова наголошує: потрібна політична воля та міжнародний тиск. Їхня організація передала списки майже 40 жінок до Офісу Президента, Координаційного штабу, Омбудсмена, Папи Римського та Білого дому.

Але про це досі говорять недостатньо голосно.

Ми не маємо права забувати про цих жінок. Бо за кожною історією - чиєсь дитинство без мами, роки болю й щоденне очікування.
