The Isienmwenro Royal Guard is a military guild within the palace system that answers exclusively to the Oba. Established by Oba Ewuare in the 15th century, the regiment was originally stationed at Ovbiyeneva, near the end of Uroghotodin Street in Ogbe. They served as the official executioners of the Benin Kingdom, being the only group authorized to carry out executions on the Oba’s directive.

Initially, their quarters were located near the palace at the beginning of Sokponba Road. However, it was later observed that the Oba’s justice, with the guild in such close proximity, was delivered too swiftly often without space for reconsideration. To curb this, their base was relocated further away, to the present Chief Ogiamien axis, in sokponba road.

In addition, detachments of the Isienmwenro Guard were stationed in several towns across the Benin Kingdom, all reporting to Chief Ekegbian, the head of the regiment. They are popularly referred to as: Asaka N’ s’Okhionba “The giant ant that sting the enemy of the oba to death”. The iwu body markings of an Isienmwenro man and woman - it ovbiuwu is drawn as a spear on the body representing the Ogala Ewuare “Oba Ewuare spear” acting as their badge of office and license.
