Speaking of taking a reasonable approach on Taiwan, I was honored to meet face-to-face with KMT Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun at Harvard yesterday. Let me emphasize that I take no position on Taipei politics and I was glad to also meet with DPP reps back in fall 2025.

My impression of Ms. Cheng is that she is poised and confident, but also curious and intellectually agile. She clearly appreciates the complexity of Taiwan's current position amidst growing US-China rivalry. My guess is that she will be a force in Taiwan politics for a long time.

We covered many topics, ranging from the 'Thucydides Trap' to the details of her April visit to China, in our hour-long exchange of views. Naturally, we did not agree on everything, but we found profound agreement on the imperative to lower cross-Strait tensions that have become perilous for all concerned over the last few years.
