I write this with no intention to offend and I appreciate the work of those I refer to below. I also understand the importance of fitness and health. Notwithstanding, I believe the following is an important message.

Those who PRIORITISE [this is a key word, do not get triggered], fitness and looking good over character and addressing the spiritual diseases of the heart in their masculinity “training” either:

i) do not know much about Islamic masculinity,
ii) seem to be grifters,
iii) are unlearned,
iv) unwise,
v) lack an Allah-centric strategy,
vi) lack grass roots experience,
vii) or, seem to have a combination of all of these.

They also seem to be those who would – going against Prophetic instruction – take Umar over Abu Bakr, may Allah be pleased with them both, even though the Prophet ﷺ explained to us that Abu Bakr – irrespective of physical attributes – was greater.

It is a classic case of:

In the land of the blind the one eyed man is king.

I strongly recommend to the people this refers to that they focus on what is most pleasing to Allah. I appreciate that some of the marketing is aimed at capturing the intended audience and that it requires a focus on aesthetics. However, I am referring to key content and not just the marketing.

We have too many man-boys who look good and are fit yet they lack character, forbearance, intellectual and moral courage, humility, compassion, convinction, truthfulness, wisdom, sincerity, Allah-centric vision, etc. These are key masculine traits.

I hope readers appreciate that this comes from someone who has extensive global experience with young and mature men in professional, leadership, da'wah and grass roots contexts. I say this not to boast, it is to provide some basis for my advice.

Al-Fudayl ibn ‘Iyad, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “Whoever has bad character has dishonored his religion, his reputation, and his manhood.”¹

Al-Shafi’i, may Allah have mercy on him, said, “Manhood is based upon four pillars: good character, generosity, humility, and cautious piety.”²

Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “The foundation of a man is his intellect, his honor is in his religion, and his manhood is in his character.”³

It was said to Hasan al-Basri, may Allah have mercy on him, “What is manhood?” Hasan said: It is the religion.⁴
