"Let's just arm one more group of moderate rebels... It'll work this time; I can feel it!" This is the gamblers fallacy in action.
Graham is laying the groundwork for decades of chaos and blow back terrorism. The concept of sending arms to the locals sounds good at first but has never served our long-term interests.
Our efforts to "arm the people" of governments we don't like led to the rise of the Taliban, Al-Qaeda, ISIS, every Shia militia in Iraq as well as the destabilization of Iraq, Syria, Libya, and Yemen, just to name a few.
I say this as a former Green Beret and CIA Paramilitary Ops officer who has been involved in these operations- they simply don't work in the long run.
There is no military solution to our conflict with Iran, POTUS should stop listening to those who have not updated their thinking since 2003 and get us out of this mess before we are sucked further in.
Update: We've now spent over $42 billion so far on Israel's war in Iran. 1 Billion per day. Remember this as you mail your taxes into IRS on April 15th.
Breaking News: The U.S. was responsible for a missile strike on an Iranian school, an ongoing military investigation found. The inquiry said the strike — which Iranian officials said killed at least 175 people — was the result of a targeting mistake. https://t.co/88FIdIJOQi
Important reminder by the Omani FM that there was a deal on the table that Trump could have taken instead of opting for war.
Trump could have declared victory. Instead he declared war.
I want to be very clear - the door to diplomacy remains open. Talks in Geneva made genuine progress towards an unprecedented agreement between Iran and the United States and although the hope was to avoid war, war should not mean that the hope of peace is extinguished. I still believe in the power of diplomacy to resolve this conflict. The sooner talks are resumed the better it is for everyone.
As yet another preemptive war is begun in the Middle East, John Quincy Adam’s words of wisdom still ring true:
“Wherever the standard of freedom and Independence has been or shall be unfurled, there will her heart, her benedictions and her prayers be.”
Like most Americans I have sympathy for the plight of the Iranian people and all subjected people around the globe, from North Korea to Tibet.
But as Adam’s wrote, America: “goes not abroad, in search of monsters to destroy.
She is the well-wisher to the freedom and independence of all.
She is the champion and vindicator only of her own.”
The Constitution conferred the power to declare or initiate war to Congress for a reason, to make war less likely.
Madison wrote that “the Executive Branch is the branch most prone to war, therefore, the Constitution, with studied care, delegated the war power to the legislature.”
As with all war, my first and purest instinct is wish Americans soldiers safety and success in their mission.
But my oath of office is to the Constitution, so with studied care, I must oppose another Presidential war.
