Did you know that Africa’s first computer assembly plant wasn’t in South Africa or Nigeria? It was in Douala, Cameroon 🇨🇲 in 1987!

Intelar (Intelligence Artificielle) was founded by Djeukam Tchameni and built PCs when most of the continent hadn’t even seen one.

In 1988, Djeukam was arrested by the regime and detained until 1990 for his pro democracy activism. Instead of breaking him, prison strengthened his resolve.

In 1991, after the arrest of Célestin Monga for his open letter to Biya, Djeukam helped create CAP Liberté (Comité d’action populaire pour la liberté et la démocratie). It became Cameroon’s most important pro-democracy movement of the early 90s.

CAP Liberté organized the “villes mortes.” Not just ghost towns, but months of protests and civil disobedience. Hundreds of thousands of people brought Douala to a standstill.

The regime struck back. Intelar’s offices were attacked and bombed. And after several failed assassination attempts against him, Djeukam went into exile.

By then the impact of the civil disobedience was irreversible. It shook Yaoundé to its core and forced the regime into the 1992 multiparty elections.

Today, Djeukam is still involved in the political scene and is a member of the “Groupe de Douala,” a non partisan committee that has been seeking to build a coalition for the October elections.

I am privileged to have known Djeukam for the last 35 years. I joined CAP Liberté while I was a student in the US and later led its US branch for several years. I consider Djeukam as a grand frère and a mentor.
