I represented Hon. H.E @HassanAliJoho, Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Mining, Blue Economy and Maritime Affairs @MiBeMa_2022 during the High-level Ministerial Roundtable on One Ocean Finance held on the margins of UNEA-7.
The discussions focussed on the need to redesign ocean finance to ensure equity, guided by science, and powered by the great potential of blue economy.
The Ocean as a global public good that delivers essential ecosystem services, requires proper valuation and investment to ensure its sustainable use; reversing the decline in ocean health, majorly constrained by a widening finance gap.
As the Government of Kenya, the first country in Africa, prepares to host the 11th edition of Our Ocean Conference (OOC 11) from 16th to 18th June 2026, in Mombasa and Kilifi Counties, this event served as a platform to call upon all Governments, private sector, academia, civil society organizations and all stakeholders to shift from fragmented funding to a coordinated, system-wide: ocean finance facility.
The number of assessed species on the IUCN Red List is now 172,620, with over 48,000 threatened with #extinction.
The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species™ is a critical indicator of the health of the world’s #biodiversity.
