@redistribu11188 Politics and military duty are not the same thing. Publicly arguing politically against wars doesn't preclude fulfilling duties when serving in uniform and under military discipline. - Debs was a civilian and not himself a soldier: he wasn't in the military or dodge the draft.
@peakcapitolism I feel like the edge cases where a draft might happen are if there’s some kind of mass-casualty false flag attack on US soil or if Trump’s people manage to actually overthrow the 2026/2028 elections and are a couple years into a really catastrophic failed occupation of Iran
@peakcapitolism An actual draft would require an act of Congress, which is probably impossible in the next session, and I doubt they’ll 1) commit to a full ground invasion and 2) decide all options short of a draft won’t cut it all in the next 10 months
The blowback from the Vietnam draft occurred in the context of a broadly popular domestic regime where conscription had been an accepted fact of life for >20yrs. Imagine a draft under the least popular admin ever, in a recession, when no one younger than 60 remembers the last one
@DougLain Where does the “civic duty” to serve in our imperialist armed forces in a war instigated against the overwhelming opposition of the people come from? Instead of mechanically reproducing 2I doctrine we should ask what about it is worth extracting and adapting for today
@Sarah_pdx The progressive blob became pro-cop in 2021 in response to crime wave propaganda and the socialist left failed to carve out an independent lane. I think the idea that the demands of 2020 lost their mass base is totally wrong. We’ve been railroaded on this one
@petersterne@chairmanmeowing Peter follow me back and we can DM about South Carolina's beautiful Greenville-Spartanburg metropolitan area, NYC is old news
@JacktheFate Alright. Idk what you're hoping to get out of wading into a 10+ year old debate like you already know everything and brushing off anyone who pushes back on your framing as a jerk but enjoy lol
@JacktheFate It's not. The term "entryism" doesn't mean anything in relation to how the capitalist parties in the US actually function and "Democratic Party entryism" doesn't usefully describe the actual strategy preached or practiced by the right wing of DSA
@sam_amiga_webs I think refining our ideas in a serious way is an important for a historically pretty confused and directionless socialist movement 👍 the "I wrote a tweet about this" and "illiteracy is a virtue" sentiments have been the real plagues on the left for a long time
I agree with Julius Malema's EFF and VI Lenin's RSDLP: sending deputies to heckle in reactionary legislatures is a useful tactic for building an opposition party. I would hope to see a larger bloc of socialists committed to disrupting the empire's Congress instead of more AOCs
I actually agree with like half of this tweet lol. Some of you have just been brain poisoned by online algorithms into reflexively being an asshole to people you've never met over the mildest possible disagreement
