On June 20, 2026, the people of Ekiti State will head to the polls to elect a governor who will lead the state for the next four years.

The election will feature 13 candidates, including incumbent Governor Biodun Oyebanji of the APC, Dr Wole Oluyede of the PDP and candidates from the ADC, Accord Party, YPP, NNPP, SDP, Labour Party, and other political parties.

As voters prepare for the polls, this performance appraisal report assessed how Oyebanji’s administration has performed on revenue growth, education, health, security, debt management, transparency, and economic development in the last 3 and a half years.

It also provided insights on key development and policy issues that should inform voters' voting choices and what the next governor should prioritise.

If you witness online abuse, whether cyberbullying, coordinated harassment, or the non-consensual sharing of intimate images, there are safe ways to take action.

The UN, in partnership with Green Dot, recommends the 5Ds of bystander intervention. Distract to interrupt the attack, Delegate by calling on others for support, Document responsibly (without causing further harm), Delay by checking in with the victim, and Direct by reporting or safely addressing the abuse.

Say no to TFGBV

What makes someone a perpetrator of digital violence or Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV) is not only directly attacking someone online using digital technologies.

Playing “neutral” or remaining silent when you could support the person being targeted or report the abuse can also make you a secondary perpetrator.

Watching, sharing, commenting on, or liking revenge porn or non-consensual intimate content posted online to harm someone also contributes to the abuse. These actions retraumatise the victim and further amplify the violence.

When you see someone being bullied, body-shamed, harassed, or targeted with revenge porn online, don’t scroll past it.

Report the content if possible and show support to the person being targeted.

Small actions like these help make our digital spaces safer for everyone to connect, interact, and express themselves.

What question comes to your mind when a survivor shares her experience of being abused or violated online?

If your first response is to ask what the survivor did to trigger the abuse, you may be unintentionally re-stigmatising and blaming the victim.

In many cases of Technology-Facilitated Gender-Based Violence (TFGBV), survivors did nothing to provoke the attack.

The next time a survivor of TFGBV shares an experience with you or online, let’s shift the conversation from “What did she do?” to “How can we support her and hold perpetrators accountable?"

“It’s just an AI-generated image; it doesn’t mean it’s real.”

Many people use this statement to dismiss the risks associated with AI-generated imagery, especially non-consensual intimate imagery shared without the consent of the person depicted.

But the harm is real.

This February, the Nigeria Data Protection Commission joined more than 60 data protection authorities worldwide in signing a joint statement on AI-generated imagery and privacy protection. The statement recognises the growing risks that the misuse of AI poses to children, women, and girls.

While we hope this global commitment translates into a digital space where AI is used responsibly, each of us also has a role to play.

Use AI in ways that respect people’s data, dignity, and privacy.

Speak out when you see AI being misused to harm others.

Just as social etiquette guides how we relate with people in physical spaces, internet etiquette guides how we should behave when interacting in the digital space.

The digital space should help us connect, interact, and learn, not become a platform where people are stripped of their dignity.

Simple online etiquette, such as respecting others in conversations, being mindful of comments, avoiding harmful content, and not body-shaming, should be habits we all cultivate.

A safer digital space begins with how we choose to treat others online.

On Day 2 of the Legal Empowerment Training for the Neighbourhood Security Watch, Dataphyte facilitated a session on community mobilisation and peace communication at Ondewari Community, Bayelsa State, within the context of community safety.

The session, led by Dataphyte’s Program Officer, Funmilayo Babatunde (@oyedunbabs), equipped participants with practical peace communication strategies for mobilising community support to achieve specific safety goals.

Emphasis was placed on the importance of inclusive community mobilisation, ensuring that all groups within the community are engaged in addressing security concerns. Participants were encouraged to adopt a co-creation approach, where decisions on community safety are made collectively by all stakeholders rather than by a faction of tye community. 

She highlighted that this approach shifts decision-making power to the community, promotes knowledge sharing, and ensures that those most affected by a specific issue are involved in developing solutions.

Earlier today, Dataphyte trained neighbourhood security watch groups in Amassoma community, Bayelsa State, on community mobilisation and media engagement as part of the legal empowerment program for Neighbourhood Security Watch organised by @Spaces4Change under the people-centred public safety project.

During her session, Dataphyte’s Program Officer, Funmilayo Babatunde (@oyedunbabs), emphasised the role of community mobilisation in strengthening community safety. She noted that bringing together diverse stakeholders, across age groups, social backgrounds, and occupations, who are either affected by a problem or play a role in solving it is central to people-centred public safety.

She further explained that conflict and security challenges are inevitable in any community where people coexist. However, the effectiveness of responses depends on the approach taken to address each issue, as well as the extent to which affected stakeholders and those with influence are consulted and actively involved in resolving each issue.

Another key focus of Dataphyte's session was how the neighbourhood security watch group can engage the media more effectively to tell their stories, raise awareness about community issues, without escalating tension. She highlighted that the narratives communities project can shape how conflicts are perceived, noting that tone and framing can either reduce fear or amplify it.

The session was complemented by other trainings that focused on the legal provisions guiding the activities of neighbourhood security watch groups, including the legal dos and don’ts within their communities.

Overall, the training forms part of the broader objective of the People-Centred Public Safety Project, which aims to strengthen safety structures that are community-driven, community-centred, and aligned with the best interests of the community.
