The Grass Hut

The sun set. The savannah air was hot and loud with bugs.

Baba Tunde and 11 other men had walked for days to reach the distant farming lands to tend and harvest their yams.
They could not return daily to the walled town; it was too far.
So they built an abà, a long, low grass hut.

The structure was not a permanent house.
Its thick roof angled down until it almost touched the dirt. Inside was just dry earth and leaves. No beds.

All 12 men slept side by side, head to toe, maximizing the space.
At night, when heavy rains rolled across the plains, the tightly woven thatch kept them dry.
The breeze filtered under the eaves, bringing cool relief.

To pass the hours before sleep, they told stories, tales of ancient Aláfins of Oyo, the clever tricks of Ìjàpá the Tortoise, and the wealthy elites in Lagos who captured faces on sheets of glass.

Baba Tunde did not sleep much.
He listened to the rain drumming against the thatch.
This shelter was temporary. When the harvest was done, they would return home and leave the grass to rot into the earth.

For Baba Tunde, it wasn’t an ethnographic specimen, it was simply a cool, safe place to rest until the morning sun called them back to the fields.

A cargo ship drifts into a fog bank off the coast of Norway and comes out three days later with every clock on board stopped at 2:17 a.m. and one extra passenger who was not on the manifest.

The extra man is Elias Voss, a quiet deckhand who can name every crew member’s childhood fear and who keeps asking what year it is. The captain, Maren Holt, locks him in the medical bay and radios for help. The reply comes from a station that shut down in 1989. When she checks the radar, the coastline has moved six kilometers inland.

They make port in a town that looks right and feels wrong. Street signs are in a language no one recognizes. Phones connect, but every call is answered by the same calm woman who already knows why they’re calling. Elias walks off the ship without being released. He tells Maren she has forty hours to decide whether the ship returns to the fog or the town does.

Maren starts piecing it together from the ship’s black box, which now contains audio from voyages that have not happened yet. In one recording she hears herself order the crew to throw Elias overboard. In another she hears the town’s church bells ringing underwater. Elias is not a stowaway. He is the only person who stayed behind the last time the fog took a place, and the fog is offering a trade: one living town for the ship and everyone on it, or the ship goes back and the town is erased from every map, memory, and record except the people who were aboard.

The crew splits. Half want to run. Half realize their families on shore are already starting to forget their names. Maren finds a child’s drawing in Elias’s pocket of the ship burning in a harbor that does not exist yet. He says the drawing is from her daughter, who will be born only if Maren chooses the town.

At 2:17 a.m. on the second night, the fog rolls back in from the streets. Maren has to choose with the engines already running and Elias standing on the dock, holding the drawing, waiting to see which version of the world she is willing to let disappear.
