Good morning, fellow Canadians. As we rise and shine to a new day, we find ourselves grappling with issues that harken back to a dystopian narrative penned in the last century. The year is not 1982, and yet, the echoes of that Orwellian world depicted in "1984" seem disturbingly resonant with our own reality today. The trust we have in our elected representatives and our public servants - a cornerstone of our democratic system - is being threatened. Transparency and straightforward answers are being replaced with doublespeak and obfuscation.

Under the Trudeau administration, our proud tradition of transparent governance appears to be under siege. Disturbingly, there is evidence that federal public servants - those who are supposed to stand as politically neutral bastions of our democracy - are devising tactics to avoid answering parliamentary questions from opposition MPs directly. It's as if a new kind of "Newspeak" has been invented, called "limitation language," designed to sidestep the truth and obscure realities.

This isn't an isolated incident of subterfuge by a rogue official; it's a calculated design, a widespread approach that affects MPs from coast to coast. The prevalence of these tactics has drawn the ire of Commons Speaker Anthony Rota, who recently issued a rebuke over the failure to fully answer written questions. His admonition, however, appears to have fallen on deaf ears.

Consider the case of Michelle Rempel Garner, the Calgary Conservative MP who sought straightforward answers from the Natural Resources Department, only to be met with cryptic responses that sidestepped her actual questions. The response was deemed appropriate by the public servants themselves, a move that harkens back to Orwell's 'Ministry of Truth,' where lies are passed off as truth, and obfuscation is the new transparency.

Adding to the Orwellian nature of this issue, Rempel Garner's proficiency in communication was seen as a threat, a risk of her exposing their failure to fully answer her question. It's a chilling reminder of a dystopian world where speaking truth to power is seen as a crime.

Meanwhile, our Minister of Public Safety, Marco Mendicino, seems to have taken a page from the same book. His responses to parliamentary questions are reminiscent of Orwell's 'Duckspeak' - utterances filled with bureaucratic jargon and vague statements that muddy the waters rather than provide clarity.

In Orwell's "1984," the Party famously proclaims, "War is peace. Freedom is slavery. Ignorance is strength." Today, it feels as if our government is telling us, "Evasion is transparency. Obfuscation is clarity. Doublespeak is honesty."

While some in the opposition, like NDP's Jagmeet Singh, seem all too comfortable with this new status quo, it's high time the rest of our representatives held the government accountable. This isn't about partisanship; it's about the fundamental principles of our democracy.

As we head into our day, let's remember that it falls upon us, the people, to hold our government accountable. It's time to demand more from our representatives, to insist on transparency and straight answers. In a democracy, the government serves at the pleasure of the people, and it's high time that Trudeau's government was reminded of that. Let's make our voices heard, demanding the transparency and accountability that we, as Canadians, not only deserve but are entitled to.
