As someone who regularly hosts, throws dinner parties, reads books, and attends church I can confirm that the small group of us doing all these things is having a blast, and if you haven’t you should try it.

About a month ago I canceled all my 1:1 meetings with my directs and skip level reports. I kept the weekly stand up and told the team to schedule with me if we need to talk.
Nothing broke. And they did call when they needed to.
Trust is so efficient compared to the the systems we build to compensate for its absence.
I was in the elevator going to my office one morning when an exec from my company got on carrying a bag of cookies. I asked him if the cookies were for his team. He said, no - the cookies were his breakfast. Seeing the curious look on my face, he said that his mother had said if he was ready for school on time, he could have cookies, so to this day he still eats cookies for breakfast.
So as you prepare for back to school, buy a lot of cookies. And someday, your kids will tell a young colleague that you bribed them with cookies to be on time, and not that they lost all Mario Kart privileges for the week by Monday at 7:05AM because they wouldn't put their shoes on.
idk what it says that it was fairly easy for AI to replace software engineers but we're not even close on writing and design
turns out being "non-technical" was the real flex
As a longtime @PirateWires reader, this was fun to wake up to. Yes, we can still just do things, like reindustrialization and energy dominance. Thanks for the shout out on NLICs.
Most modern beach vacations won’t include “land yachting,” but pictures from the Library’s Print and Photographs Division show it was a possibility at the turn of the century!
Hi 👋- this is how I lawyer today. Also history doesn’t repeat itself but it rhymes. When I was a baby lawyer, there were still a few dictaphones kicking around the office that worked basically the same way - you’d dictate a memo outline and the junior and legal assistant would turn it into work product. Same same but different.
1965: Lawyer → Dictaphone → junior associate → memo.
2026: Lawyer→ Wispr Flow → AI agent → memo.
Sixty years of technological progress, and lawyers are still talking to ourselves.
